Last time a Senators club quaffed of the sweet nectar that is first place was in 1946. when the late Frisco Edwards got his charges away from the barrier with a 13-game win streak. The club was still there in May of that year, when Frisco suddenly - died, and Tedd Gullic kept it on top until shortly after July 4 when Buddy Ryan's We natchees took command and kept it . . . Jack Wilson in 1927 had the Senator half a game from the leading Spokanes in late July, but couldn't catch 'em . . . They're cooking up a down town parade, a State Employees Night Queen contest and a few other items for the occasion. The Senator ballgamers will be the judges in the queen contest, and from what we've heard they'll have a tough go in that struggle. And while Lady Fortune frowned on him last night at Waters Field, she had another big smile for the vil lage Senators just as big as the one of the night before when the same Senators eked out their 3-2 win over the Tri-City Braves. Last night it was 7-6 for the Senators, in 10 innings, thanks entirely to the reluctant little Indian rookie, Rod Cowapoo, on the Braves club. He put a quick finish to what had been a slugging match by committing two errors on Gene Here's Dope on Hot WIL Pennant Battle "W L Salem 36 21 Lewiaton 33 31 Edmonton 38 as Vancoure. . 32 36 Pet. Then in trying to catch the fleet Tanselli going into second base, the kid threw the ball over Len Tran's head and right field. Tanselli kept right on rambling and scored easily with the winning run. Rod no doubt wishes today he had never heard of this game of baseball. He was playing left field after having done some pinch-running for crippled Jack Warren in the ninth. The win, no matter how gained, was as sweet as if it had been collected by a 10-0 count It kept the Senators' roaring win binge going at 11 straight, and also kept them atop the league standings by rnalf a game over Lewis ton. The3roncs, cuss 'em, again beat Spokane last night, 4-3. Also, Edmonton took two more from the sinking Vancouver Caps to crawl within IV games ox the leading Salems. Tri-City and Salem finish their series today with a split double bill first gam at 2 p.m., sec ond at 8:15. Lewiaton plays Spo kane a pair today, also, but Ed monton is idle. Last night's addition to the vic tory parade was for the most part an inartistic delivery unbefitting league leaders. It was only Tri Citys inability to bash Lefty Dave Dahle in the pinches that kept the Braves at bay. The enemy got a run in the third and Salem tied it in the fourth, Dahle driving in the tally with a fly. The Senators went 4-1 ahead in the fifth on three walks, a fly and Don Masterson's two-run triple off Jim Hedge- cock. Huge Jerry Ballard made it 6-1 in the seventh when he lashed a Hedgecock curve far over the left field fence for his first homer since joining the club. Jim Deyo had singled ahead of Jerry. All was. roses, and part of the 1,681 crowd went home as Tri- City came to bat in the ninth. That part should have stuck around. Four hits and three walks, plus a run-producing force play by Pinch-Hitter Edo Vannl tied the score with five big runs. Dah le was Iong4gone when it was finally stopped, and so was Lar ry Borst, who could do noth ing but toss in two of the walks as a reliefer for Dahle. Sidearmer Joe Nicholas came on to squash things masterfully in the big bindf. and picked up the win, his ninth. Hits were zooming all over the park as the league's 1-2 bat ting teams got into this one. Salem had 15, Tri-City 14. Ballard cracked out a perfect 4-for-4 and Masterson had 4-for-5. But the "hit" that counted was the one Tanselli lofted to little Cowapoo. Big Buck Tanner, victim of Friday's 3-2 heartbreaker, was again the loser last night He was the third Tri-City flinger. A near-tragedy oecured just be fore the game as Warren was having his batting practice licks. The bat flew from his hands on a swing and hit Dez Charouhas who was standing only feet away. The blow was on the center fielder's chest and it was a wick ed one, A late hospital report told that Dez will be okeh not badly hurt His Injury is but one of many suffered by the Braves. Vanni is hobbling about on a bad ankle. Warren is playing with a chipped ankle bone, Nick Pesut has seven stitches in his head as a result of being hit with a bat Len Tran has a badly swollen knee, and Cowapoo' has a broken -heart Incidentally, last night's mix was the first won by Salem in extra Innings this year.
