Initiation for Altrusa Club Salem Altrusa Club met for its regular dinner meeting, Thurs day at the Marion Hotel with Mrs. Lois Keeney presiding. Multiple Mix Home Made Mixes Open Vistas of Adventures in Baking, Recipes By MAXINE BUREN . Statesman Woman's Editor One of the shortening manufacturers has put out a handy booklet on what to do with home-made mixes apd we can't re sist giving you a pretty thorough review of the pamphlet though the poor manufacture must remain) anonymous. With two basic recipes, a hot bread mix and a pie-cookie mix, the authoress filled up 16 pages with waysUo vary them. Her recipe for IVz cups mix goes like this: HOT BREAD MIX 1 6 cups sifted flour 3 tablcspoorfe baling powder 1 tablespoon salt 1 cup shortung Cut shortening into sifted dry ingredients until mixture looks like coarse cornmeal. Store in covered conta.'tier, no re frigeration is neeeded. For biscuits, add V cup milk to one cup of the hot bread mix and blend welL Knead lightly on a board several times, roll out and bake 15 minutes at 425 degrees. Add Vi cup grated cheese to mix before adding the milk for cheese biscuits. Combine 1 teaspoon grated orange rind, 2 tablespoons orange juice, la cup sugar and put Vx teaspooe on each biscuit before baking. This makes orange biscuits. Use half cup milk to one cup of the mix in your drop bis cuit . SUGAR AND SPICE BREAD 2'-i cups hot bread mix 3i cup milk H cup sugar 1 egg Combine sugar and mix, add milk and lightly beaten egg which have been mixed together. Mix until smooth. Pour in 8x8 greased pan. Sprinkle with a crumbled mixture of V cup brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon and 1 tablespoon' shorten ing. Bake at 400 degrees for about 25 minutes. WAFFLES 2 cups hot bread mix 2 eggs 2 tablespoons sugar ' 1 cups milk Combine mix and the sugar. Beat eggs and milk. Combine but do not attempt to remove lumps. Bake as usual 1 MUFFINS 2 cups hot bread mix 1 cup milk 2 tablespoons sugar 1 egg Combine as for waffles, mixing only until well moistened. Bake at 400 degrees 20 to 25 minutes. PIE-COOKIE MIX " 6 cups flour 1 tablespoon salt 1 pound (2b cups) shortening Cut together with pastry blender or two knives until pieces are size of peas. Store covered. It takes IVi cups mix, 2 tablespoons water to make an 8 or 9 inch pie shell, one crust Best, say the experts to blend Yt cup of the mixture with all the water first, then mix all. SUGAR COOKIES ' ' . Stir together 2 cups mix, add jfri cup sugar, 1 teaspoon baking powder. Blend in 1 egg and drop by spoonsful into a mixture of 2 tablespoons sugar and 2 teaspoons cinnamon in a bowL Shake bowl to coat Bake at 375 degrees for 10 to 12 min utes. If you want to roll them out add Y cup flour in first ' step. Father Bernard New mannn read the vows at 11 o'clock. Given in marriage by her fath er, the bride wore a floor length gown of white satin with long tram and an inset panel of lace from neckline to hemline. Her veil was fingertip length, held by a heart shaped cap trimmed in seed pearls. She carried a white orchid. Joan Holt of Scio wearing blue net formal, was maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Kathy and Geri Hartman of Sublimity, cousins of the bridegroom. They wore gowns of yellow and green net All car ried fan-shaped nosegays of pas tel flowers. Kathy Weddle was flower girl and Stevie Weddle was ring bear er. For her daughter's wedding, Mrs. Morrissette chose a light green two-piece knit dress. Her flowers were yellow rosebuds. On their return, the bridegroom, who has been in training at Camp Roberts, will leave for overseas duty. Jefferson Mrs. John Wright and Mrs. Irvine Wright attended a shower for the latter's daugh ter, Mrs. Donald Helseth, at Christian House in Corvallis Wed nesday night Seventy-three wom en were present for the shower sponsored by the women of the Corvallis Christian church, of which Mrs. Helseth's husband is pastor. The Maoris are believed to have immigrated to New Zealand in a great fleet of canoes in the 14th Century. . f CUANING J REPAIRING RESTYLING Nevy Officers Installed at Woman's Club Annual reports and installation of the 1953-54 officers highlighted the last business meeting of the season for the Salem Woman's Club on Friday afternoon.
