The bids Tuesday were on con struction of substructures and completion of an assembly bay at the powerhouse. The lowest of the six bids opened by Army Engi neers was $29320,997.36, well un der the government estimate of $38,677,520.73. The bid came from the com bined firms of Winston Brothers Co., Minneapolis; McLaughlin, Inc., Great Falls; P and S Con. trading Co., Butte; Johnson. Drake and Piper Co., Inc., Min neapolis; Donovan Construction Co., St. Paul; C P. Lytle Co.. Sioux City. Ia.: S. Birch and Sons Construction Co.. Great Fall; Fo ley Brothers. Inc., St. Paul; Fe gles Construction Co., Ltd., Min neapolis. Bean Growers To Cut Crop EUGENE (A Lane County bean srowers may have to cut their cron a third this year, E. I. Pit kin.-.manager of the Eugene Fruit Growers Association, said Tues day. He blamed wet weather for de laying the bean season about two weeks, and said this would bring about a shortage of harvest help unless Lane schools postpone their fall opening a week. Pitkin said late beans would be re&dy for harvest about Sept 1. Most schools are scheduled to open Sept. 8. Pitkin proposed the opening be set back to Sept. 14. He said about 5,000 students us ually work in the harvest. German Wine Intake Rises DUESSELDORP, Germany Ufi Those stein lifters in Bavaria aren't going to like this but the German Wine Growers' As sociation says Germans are drink ing 50 per cent more wine now than they did in 1939. One consolation for the beer lovers the association puts the annual German wine consumption at 7 liters per person. That's in the minor leagues compared with the French, who do away wit! 150 liters. Taber Aims Attack at Soil Conservation WASHINGTON m Rep. Taber R.-N.Y.) told the House Tuesday a 55 million dollar increase pro posed by his Appropriations Com mute for 1954 soil conservation pavments is mainly for the benefit of ' "the limestone trust" Disagreeing with the committee he heads. Taber urged the House to bold the conservation program authorization to the 140 million dol lai recommended by President Ei senhower. The committee approved the In creases by a 19 to 18 vote. It is part of a bill appropriating $712,308, S. J to finance the agriculture de- pal tment for the fiscal year start ing July 1. Taber's amendment to cut the extra 55 . million from the con servation program will be voted on Wednesday. The New Yorker called the soil conservation program "a limestone selling scheme" and said most far mers who receive smal! checks for conservation practices "are asham ed to take the money.
