By Committee Budget economies as drastic as eliminating some outlying Salem city fire stations were I aired this week as seven budget subcommit tees warmed up for a city budget session at 8:30 p.m. Monday in City Hall. The fire department already was in for considerable discussion, in cluding making first aid service a separate department and asking Salem voters to support it by spe cial millage levy. 'Regarding the hints of such fire changes, Fire Chief Ellsworth L. Smith declared flatly ! Friday I do not recommend reducing any of the present services of the fire department" He said abandoning any outlying fire station would be detrimental to fast firefighting service and probably would result in higher insurance rates. The city budget committee head ed by Alderman Daniel J. Fry now has under scrutiny City Mana ger J. L. Franzen's $2,500,000 bud get draft which is in balance but has left for the committee to de termine such ifems as salary rais es, emergency fund and several special projects. The budget meeting will follow the regular City Council session at 7:30 p.m. when a light agenda is expected. ' - - A tighter, policy of commercial driveways will be proposed In ad ministration v amendments to a similar tightening bill brought in recently by Alderman Thomas Armstrong. Another house on Center Street also will be sought by the state or church, since the latter would be sole occupant of this block in the mall and would be required to cooperate with the Capitol Planning Commission in keeping its appearance up to that of state properties. Secretary of State Earl T. New- bry's earlier suggestion that the state buy the church building and make necessary changes for of fice use, "for a new building will be needed very shortly," was passed up by Friday's decision. He said it would . have provided more than 12,000 feet of usable space with a $22,000 annual rental, replacing some dwellings now in use for offices. Although Robert W. Magee, 52, who died Thursday at a local hospital following a year s illness. Magee was born in Nixon, Tex., In 1901 and lived nearly all his life in that state. He. came to Sa lem nine years ago from Corpus Christl, Tex., where he had oper ated a cleaning establishment. In Salem he was a carpenter. He was a member of the Carpenters Union, Salem Local, and of the Salem Eagles Lodge. Survivors include the widow. Mrs. Alice E. Magee of Salem sons Pat with the U. S. Grand Jury to Probe Douglas County Death The slaying of C. D. Burgoyne, Riddle area farmer on Feb. 1 by a group of 14 police officers, will be Investigated by a Douglas County grand Jury, Gov. Paul Pat terson announced Friday following a conference with Attorney Gen eral Robert Y. Thornton. The officers contend they shot Burgoyne when ho resisted arrest on a charge of threatening a neighbor. The investigation originally was requested by a "Douglas County committee lor justice, composed largely of Southern Douglas Coun ty residents. They appeared before uov. Patterson and the attorney general here three weeks aero and charged that Burgoyne's slaying apparently was not Justified. - Spokesmen at the conference said Burgoyne could ' have been arrested with the use of tear gas or sending some trusted neighbor into his cabin. Gov. Patterson said the attorney general found In his own investi gation sufficient facts to warrant the grand jury Investigation. Both Thornton and the governor said the Douglas County sheriff and district attorney invited a grand Jury investigation and had cooperated in the preliminary in vestigation by the attorney gener als omce. Marine Gamp Plans Okelied Arrangement for . the Salem Marine Corps Reserve unit to at tend summer training exercises next June at Camp Pendleton, Calif., were made at a meeting recently at Camp Pendleton. The Marine Reserve summer training program will take place June IS to 27. Plans are now being made, said Maj. He was married to Cora Inez Benson in 1897 at Sil ver Creek, Neb. She died In 1947 in Nebraska. Rockford ljyed nearly all his life In Nebraska coming to .Dallas in 1948.
