ROBERT SMITH - Statesman Correspondent WASHINGTON Rumors that : the Air Force Is showing renewed i Interest in the possibility) of lo- ; caung a service : academy any ; where in Oregon are false, accord ing to Air Force and Congression al authorities, ji i Recent surveys of farmlands in tne Mt. Angel and Silverton areas of Marion County, together with rumored statements by Air Force officials, set off a chain reaction of protest in letters to Ren. Wal ter Norblad. Rumors were founded principally on the fact that in No vember, 1950, 1 an Air Force list of 29 proposed sites for an acade my included one in the Canby Aurora area of Clackamas Coun ty. A year later this list was boiled down to" seven sites, none in Ore- eon, 1 More recently the Air Force has suspended further action on selec tion of an academy site, Congress man . Norblad was informed this week by Air Force Maj. Gen, Rob ert E. L. Eaton. Norblad said he was convinced any recent govern ment surveys in Oregon had no connection with the old academy proposal. Congress has never authorized the Air Force to build its own counterpart to West Point and Annapolis, and the Air Force to day can take no further action without congressional approval. A Pentagon-written biH, intro luced by Chairman Dewey Short of the House Armed Services Committee, would authorize a commission to start all over again in finding an appropriate site for a permanent academy. It also pro vides $10 million for setting up a temporary academy at some ex isting air force installation unitil a permanent academy can be com pleted. 'I But a committee spokesman predicted it would be "a long, long time before rny such plan might be carried out. No congressional hearings have been scheduled on the bill. A plethora of bills to authorize an academy in past sessions of congress have never been enacted. Most were sponsored by congress men who each wanted the school located in his own congressional district. Twelve Named To Committee Oregon's committee on interstate cooperation was named Friday by Gov. Paul L. Patterson and the presiding officers of the - legisla ture. The 12-man committee works with other states in solving mu tual problems and working out uniform legislation. Gov. Patterson, Senate President Eugene E. Marsh and Speaker of the House Rudie Wilhelm Jr. auto matically are members. The governor reappointed Fi nance Director Harry irorman, State Engineer Charles E. Strick lin and Public Utilities Commis sioner Charles H. Heltzel to the committee. t ' The legislative members are: . Sens. Robert D. Holmes, Gear hart; Elmo Smith, John Day, and Paul Geddes, Roseburg; and Reps. Carl Francis, Dayton; Lee Ohm art, Salem; and Robert Root, Med ford, Angell Endorses Luncheon Series WASHINGTON LB President Eisenhower's series of luncheons with congressmen "should result In a better spirit of co-operation in the attempt to find solutions to the momenous problems facing us," Rep. Milwaukie. has filed a petition asking the public utilities commis sioner for a hearing on the 20 per cent surcharge which PGE . im posed, with the approval of the commissioner, ? on its customers to pay the cost of steam gen erated power during last fall's water shortage. Red Blockade Proposed by Chiang's Son SAN FRANCISCO UF The son of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek said Friday a "complete economic blockade" of the coast of Red China was needed to apply pres sure on the Communists. Mai. Gen. Chiang Wego, who ar rived Thursday night for a tour of U. S. military installations, told a news conference: "Complete blockade by us alone would not be possible to carry out. This would be work for all of us, including, the British." This last statement was in re sponse to a question in which he was reminded tne tsnusn nave said they would oppose the stop- ing of their ships by a blockade. Questioned further, Chiang con ferred with the head of the visit ing Chinese Nationalist mission, Lt. Gen. Hsu Pei-Kan, deputy chief of staff, and said: "We are run ning into political matters and as member of the armed forces we are not permitted to talk about that."
