Births Start Slow in '53: Deaths Rise t Births got off to a slow start in Marion County for 1953, although late reports added to the all-time high 'already recorded for last year, the health executive com mittee learned Thursday. January births included 104 boys and 82 girls, compared to 117 and 93 a year ago. Since last month's committee meeting, 17 birth reports reached the health department, to make the 1952 total 2,772, more than 100 above the previous record of 2.665 In 1950. Deaths last month increased to 73 from 71 in Januarv.. 1852. Thev included eight children under one montn and three more under one year old. Nineteen deaths from heart dis ease made it the leading cause. followed by disease of the arteries and cancer with 9 each, apolexy with 8. The group also discussed the need of better police : protection, George (Pat) Patterson was ap pointed to contact Keizer and Four Corners in regards . to it.
