Saturdcry rebrnarr li 1853 J Split Decision Against Utahan Victor Boosts Hopes For Shot at Crown NEW YORK im Roland la Starza rallied, down the stretch gainst Rex Layne, a tiring" buUy boy from the sugar beet lands of Lewiston, Utah, to pull out a spin 10-round decision Friday night at Madison Square Garden. ? The victory moved him toward a June title bout with the Rocky Marciano - Joe walcott winner. Layne weighed 200, La Starza 190. The ex-collegian from New York City College edged home on the ballots of Referee Al Berl and Judge Art Susskind. Judge Harold Barnes voted: for Layne. Berl had It 6-3-1. Susskind 6-4 and Barnes' ballot for Layne was 5-4-1. The AP card had it 44-2. GraeUing Boat It was a gruelling match an the way with Layne bulling La Starza In the early stages, raking his head with .heavy right handed fire and digging solid right hands to the body. La Starza almost went down in Che first minute of action ,from a right hand shot to the jaw. but he sagged into the ropes and clutched. The win boosted La Starza's chaaces of getting a title shot with Marciano; if Rocky still Is the champ after April 10. Roland lost a disputed split decision to the Brockton, Mass., blockbuster back In 1950 when both were unbeaten prospects. Time after time In the last four rounds. The Viks won seven out of 12 matches in varsity action and notched 11 of 14 In exhibitions. The next engagement for the Salem grapplers is the annual Big Six Tourney, set for the Vikings mats next Thursday and Friday.
