The new operation lasted two hours and 15 minutes. It was undertaken to give the IS month old boy a start towaVd a normal life and to forestall a possible brain infection. Rodney and bis twin. Roger Lee, had been connected at the tops of their heads before they were divided Dec. 17 in a history -making. 12 hour and 40 minute operation. The separation left the young sters without natural caps for their heads. L Roger Lee has been in a coma since then. Physicians said his condition is too precarious for any plastic work at this time. Strip of Skin The plastic surgery Tuesday gave Rodney skin top that cov ered approximately 75 per cent of his brain. The cap was formed of a strip of skin from Rodney's body that had been made ready for the transfer. The rest of the child's brain Is protected by the natural mem branous skin covering, called the dura mater. Thus, his brain now la entirely protected by a natural shield. They cut along two lines, one just above -the eye brows and tne other about three inches higher. The parallel lines ran around the front of th head and reached from ear to ear. They removed this strip bf skin a foot long and three inches wide and then put it back in place, and stitched it down." All the stitches except those f above the left ear were removed Tuesday. The strip of skin first- was brought across Rodney's head toward his right ear and then, was brought diagonally forward toward his left eye. Area Uncovered Left uncovered was a bare patch over the left eye and left temple. This portion will be covered later. Then the tiny patient will have a natural, permanent covering for his entire head. Some of the skin was from the side of the head, a naturally hairy region in humans. Thus, if Rod ney survives, he should have some hair on his head. Later a supporting structure, in the form of grafted bone or a plas tic or metal substance, will be placed between the inner and out er brain coverings the mem branous brain cover and the skin put in place Tuesday. That will give his brain the rig Id protection It requires. Tree-Planting Machines Made RALEIGH. N.C. VP) Tree planting machines on open and fairly level ground can plant from 7,000 to 10,000 seedlings with a two-man crew in an eight-hour day, says John E. Ford, assistant forester for the North Carolina State-College extension service. Ford noted the Increase In the use of the machines in the last several years by landowners, saw mill operators and other organiza tions. He added, however, that hand-planting was the only meth od possible in many places and that it was doubtful that the plant ing machines would be efficient in areas smaller than 10 acres.
