jg-Tho Statesman. Scdanu Orxyott Thurtdor, Auqpit II, 1952 Wilson Seeks Police Force Reinstatement Arch Wilson. Salem patrolman who was dismissed from civil serv ice on physical grounds after he was injured in line of duty. Wed nesday sought reinstatement in the police department. The Salem Civil Service Commis sion indicated a formal hearing would be given him after he is re-examined by Dr. W. J. Stone. city health officer. Wilson offered his own doctor's examination re ports, contending he is fit for po- t - ' i lice auiy. Police Chief Clyde A. Warren told the commission he would per fer not to withdraw the Wilson dis missal, "because of his (Wilson's) attitude in this matter." When Wilson was taken off police duty because of his health, he was given a city job at the engineering shops. . J The Commission at Its City Hall meeting yesterday straightened out a point in its military leave policy arVitoh nermit leave tr be granted Patrolman George Flawn who en listed in military service ramer than await a call to duty. t ntv Attnmpv Chris J. KowitZ gave the commission a ruling that state law requires we resiorauuu of a Job to any person who goes into service, whether called or by enlistment and whether or not there is a declared "time of war." Point Not Settled Kowitz said the one point which could be questioned seriously is restoration rights to a man who re-enlists after he is released from service. This point has not been raised in local civil service yet Both Chief Warren and Fire Chief Ellsworth Smith reported to the commission that no violation of civ il service rules had come to their attention during July. Chief Smith said the firemen's eligible list is down to four men. three of whom were unwilling rec ently to take a fireman s job on the temporary status necessary be cause vacancies are due to mili tary leaves. The commission said a new firemen's examination would be called soon. ) Linhart Off Probation Promotion of Fireman . Royce Linhart to full civil service rights after probation was accepted by the commission. Fireman Donald Hill was admit ted to civil service after serving on a pro tern vacancy. Employment of Richard Minten and Eugene E. Wegner as firemen was reported, to fill vacancies created by retirement of Herbert Savage ' and resignation of Chief W. Pr Roble. Although the assist ant chiefs job was not filled when Assistant Chief Smith was appoint ed chief, the total number of fire department post was kept . at 87. Resignation of Robert A. - Fied ler from the police force was ac cepted. v Friesens Sell West Salem Box Factory Changed ownership of the west- side Salem box factory, involving a trade for a Southern California motel, was announced Wednesday.
