Do as I say . . . not as I do, is the rule of
many public agencies. It will be nice to get
those state-owned places on Summer Street
cleaned of unsightly weeds, a condition the
city would disallow private citizens' property.
Random thought ... wonder if the baby-
voiced girl who sings about potato chips Is
a daughter of Betty Boop.
Business enterprise- . . . The camera sup
ply shops in the city should build a bridge or
tear down a courthouse at least a couple of
times a year. It would be a paying business.
That blob ... of soft gooey stuff you saw
oozing around town in the heat of the past
few days was us writer, journalist, foods
expert and very warm humid being . . .

Only Five Girls
In Festival Cast
While it takes more than a
score of young men to play the
important roles in the Oregon
Shakespearean festival's four pro
ductions for 1952, five women
handle all the female leads easily.
Two are veterans of the festival
Clara Margaret Daniels of Med
ford, and Suzanne La Ma ire Han
son, Ashland and other three, new
here but experienced actresses,
are Eleanor Prosser, Stanford uni
versity graduate student and for
mer Occidental college instructor
in drama; Virginia Chesse, San
Francisco State college student and
TV actress, and Marjorie Lov
berg, Montana university student
who has also played profession
ally. Miss Prosser plays Beatrice in
"Much Ado About Nothing" and
Portia in "Julius Caesar". Mrs.
Chesse plays the charming French
princess in "Henry V" and Mir
anda in "The Tempest." Miss
Lovberg, runs the gamut of
Shakespearean roles from the
guileless Hero, in "Much Ado
About Nothing," to the hostess,
Mistress Quickly, in "Henry V."
She also plays Iris in "The Tern
pest" and Calpurnia in "Julius
Caesar."
Like Miss Prosser, both Mrs.
Chesse and Miss Lovberg have
other duties in the company as
well. Both sing in the madrigal
group under Hans Lampl, direc
tor of the new program of Eliza
bethan music at the festival. Miss
Lovberg will appear with the
Elizabethan folk dancers, Mrs.
Chesse and her husband, Dion,
will stage a Punch and Judy show
as part of the pre-show activity,
and both do box office, costume,
and stage.
The festival opens its 30-day
season in Ashland on August 1.
