June 21, Oregon Christian Churches Open Centennial Convention Monday at Tabernacle in Turner More than 2.500 oersons are ex pccted to attend the 100th annual . . . il. rs rKio xaie session ui me uicguu tian Missionary Convention (Dis ciples of Christ or Christian Churches in Oregon) at the Tur ner Memorial Tabernacle at Tur ner beginning Monday evening, June 23. It will extend through Sunday, June 29. John Paul Pack, minister of University Christian Church in Seattle, will be the principal speaker, appearing each evening and at the closing day's afternoon session. Missionaries participating in clude Hallim C. Shorrock Jr. of Seattle, on furlough from three years of educational youth work In Japan under appointment by the United Christian Missionary Society, and Mel Byers, returned missionary to China and Burma. Daily Bible studies will be con ducted bv Roger Carstenson, pro fessor at Phillips Universty, Enid, Okla., formerly an Oregon min ister and professor at Northwest Christian College. Salem ministers who will par ticipate include Harold H. Lyman, Court Street Christian, who will deliver one of a series of six ser mons by Oregon ministers on Tuesday afternoon. Donald Payne, minister of Christian education at First Christian Church, to moder ate a training class on Christian education each afternoon. The choir of First Church, under the direction of Dean Melvin Geist, will present special music Mon day evening. Hubert Sias, minister of Mal lory Avenue Church, Portland, will preside. Orville F. Mick, min ister of -the Dallas Church, is the program chairman. Charles H. Addleman, Portland, is state exe cutive secretary. Although the history of the Christian Churches in Oregon goes back to 1846. when three congre gations were formed in Yamhill County, the annual convention dates from 1852, when the first meeting was held in an oak grove near the present community of McCoy. The 2,500-capacity structure near Turner was erected in 1891 by George Turner and his sister, Mrs. Cornelia A. Davis, in memory of their parents. Vacation Bible Schools Have Final Programs Some 170 children are enrolled in the two daily vacation Bible schools in Salem which will con tinue through the coming week. Several closed Friday, with no new schools slated next week. Knight Memorial Congregation al Church had 65 children, and will have closing exercises Friday at 7:30 p.m.; Kingwood Church enroled 103. The Foursquare Gospel school closed Friday after teaching 77 children during a two-weeks ses sion. During the decade of his pas torate, more than 1,300 persons! have been added to the church s membership and the congregation conducted a building program which climaxed in dedication of the new church at Cottage and Marion Streets just a year ago. Strain has been active also in the state and national programs of the Disciples of Christ and last month represented Christian churches of the Northwest as a speaker for the international con vention of the denomination. Jones Honored Bv Pomona Grange Statesman Newt Service WALDO HILLS Memorial ser vices for the late W. A. Jones were held at the quarterly meeting of the Marion County Pomona Grange at the Grange Hall here Wednesday night. I Plans for the annual Pomona picnic Aug. 17, at Stayton Park , were discussed. A sum of $50 to purchase a milk goat for Korea was voted. About 40 entered in a rose display. ! The group will meet again Oct. 15 with Woodburn grange as host. $300 and there was difficulty in locating one at that price. H o w e v e r. Magicians Set Session A meeting of the Magic Round table, a newly organized group of Willamette Valley professional and amateur magician - entertainers, will be held tonight at 7:30 o'clock at Mayflower HalL Refreshments and a magic how are on the agenda, according to President Jack Spong of Salem. The group is organized on a work scop basis to exchange ideas and new tricks. About 15 or 29 enter tainers are expected to b present. One qualification for member ship in the group is that the ap plicant has presented magic enter tainment for at least two years.
