Clai aims Former Guard At State Prison John Leroy Ward, Salem resi dent and farmer guard at the Ore gon State Prison, died early Sat urday at a Newberg hospital fol lowing a lengthy illness. A resident, with his wife, of 4013 Marget St., Salem, Ward re tired two years ago after holding a guard Job at the prison for 14 years. He was born June 22, 1884, at Cherokee, Iowa. He came to Ore gon in 1909 and lived until 11 years ago at Portland and New' berg prior to coming to Salem. He was married at Portland in 1911 to Fay Hurst who survives. Ward was for many years a Multnomah County deputy Sheriff under Sher iff T. M. Hurlburt. In ' addition to the widow, Mrs. Fay Ward pf Salem, the deceased also is survived by two brothers. William and J. Charles Ward of Portland; sisters, Mrs. Bern Ice Peterson of . Oak Grove, Mrs. Lil lian Cordner of Pacific Palisades, Calif., and by several nieces and nephew. Woman Hurt In Crash Near 99-E Junction An Albany woman was the only person injured in a three-car col lision Saturday morning just south of the 12th Street junction. She was Mrs. Owen Smith, 53, who was taken to Albany General Hospital at her own request. Hos pital attendants there said the full extent of her injuries were not known, although she sustained severe lacerations on her leg and jaw. She was riding with her husband. Nona of the occupants in one of the other two cars, driven by Mrs. Robert Brownell of 672 Cascade Dr.. was injured. State police re ports available did not list the occupants of the third car. 3 Valley Men Due From Far East, Three Valley men were due to arrive in Seattle this weekend on two transports returning from the Far East, the Defense Department reported. Arriving Saturday aboard the transport Hugh J. Gaffey was Lt. Col. Virgil F. Field of Salem. Two were scheduled to arrive today a board the transport An derson. They were Sgt. Vernon E. Boy Involved in Shooting Case Due in Court Roger Allen Howard, 16-year-old youth implicated in the shoot ing last Tuesday at Volz's Speed Shop, Is to appear Juno 18 before Judge Joseph Felton. The lad, one of three boys who are accused of having tried to burglarize the Speed Shop on the Portland Road, has been accused of shooting four .25 caliber bullets into Glenn Voli while trying to enter the store. Volz is said by Salem General Hospital to be in a "good" condition. Howard faces charges of bur glary not in a dwelling and con cealing stolen property, A request by District Attorney K. O. Stadter has been filed for the return of Howard to the Dis trict Court and it is possible that the June 18 hearing may include this request. The other two boys, Robert L. Morris and Frank D.
