AH Pleased ..--ss- w miles were all around Wednesday when bids were opened on bonds to pay the Oreg-on veterans' bonus. From left. State Legion Commander Hollis Hull of Albany smiled on behalf of the veterans who will get checks; Rnssell M. Colweli, vice president of First National Bank of Portland, was happy because the banking syndicate he represented was low bidder; William F. Gaarenstroom, state director of veterans affairs, because the Interest rat was favorable for the state. (Story on page 1.) Pole Sheds Inspected on Polk Tour T1AT.T.AS - Polo barns and sheds were observed on a tour held in Polk county recently by farmers from Clackamas, Yam hill, and Marion counties, reports fi. John Hansen, Polk County ex tension agent. The group observed the pole type loafing shed constructed by Walter Lierman, Independence. This shed was erected at a cost of 60 cents per square foot and is satisfactory for housing his dairy cattle, he said. A sheep shed on the Nels And erson farm was observed. This shed, using treated pole construc tion, was 36 x 80 feet in size, and was built at a minimum cost by the pole-constructed type plan. A shingle roof was put on this building and lower grade siding was used, making a very satis factory sheep shed at minimum cost. The final stop was at the Jack Flaming farm, Monmouth, to ob serve the pole type loafing shed attached to the side of his dairy barn. This shed was built at the cost of 38 cents per square foot, using treated poles for support. Hansen emphasized that the use of treated poles is becoming more popular due to the long life of the pressure treated poles. The poles are placed about four feet in the ground and are spaced all the way from 9 to 12 feet apart, A Bring Your Scrap to the CAPITAL BARGAIN HOUSE 145 Center AND WEIGH FREE! Grain Prices Turn Lower CHICAGO After a short lived attempt at carrying onward i with the previous session's upturn. ' grains turned lower on the board of trade Wednesday. Final prices ' showed losses running to nearly 3 cents with soybeans weakest. j Once again, as has been the case j frequently over fecent months, the ' market could not produce any sus- I tained demand. j The good crop outlook, Imports of Canadian feed grains and re- ports some soybean processors may have to close down encouraged liquidation. Wheat finished 1 to 1 lower, corn l-l7s lower, oats -2!8 lower, rye -2 lower, soybeans l-2 lower and lard 10 cents lower to 2 cents a hundred pounds higher. DAIRY ASSOCIATION GROWS The Marion County Dairy Breeders Association gained 26 cows during the past six months to reach a total of nearly 3,000. Richard Barnes, Silyerton, presi dent o fthe Association, said the service is available to all Marion County folks with dairy cows and over half of Clackamas coun ty. Offices are located in Silver ton, where technicians Bill Will iams and Paul Mann headquarter. FARM YAMHILL Invites YWashlngtoin YAMHILL INVITES WASH. CLOSED SUNDAYS Stock Market Session Slow NEW YORK (iP) In a slow and rather uneventful session, the stock market declined with soft ness displayed in rails and oils Wednesday. There was little on the positive side of the news budget to impel the market downward. Actually, a lack of definite news during trading hours in the steel industry dispute over wages and prices was one of the prime causes for market caution and nervous ness. One of the first signs of the fall showed up in Northern Pacific. It lost 5 points yesterday, opened to day unchanged, and closed Wed nesday off 2 at 74. It was the day's most actively traded issue with 29,200 shares changing hands. Volume amounted to 1,090,000 shares, one of the slower days of the year.
