Anel Abbey Church, a $300,000 reinforced concrete build ing with buff brick and terra-cot-ta lacing, will be dedicated on the least of St. Benedict, Friday, March 21. Many bishops, abbots and clergy have been invited for the festive occasion to mark another mile stone in the work of the Benedic tines at Mt. Angel. They founded and named the town in the early BOs and have survived two disas trous fires. The new church is in Roman esque style. A rose window rises above the porch or atrium, its full beauty seen only from within the church. The Most Rev. Archbishop Ed ward D. Howard of Portland will officiate at the solemn blessing ceremony at 10 a.m. The Rt. Rev. Abbot Thomas Meier, OSB, of Mt. Angel will offer the solemn pon tifical mass. In the traditional observance of the least of St. Benedict as Clergy Day at Mt. Angel abbey, dinner will be serv ed to the visiting prel ates and clergy at noon. Open housefor laymen will be beld on the first Sunday of May. highlighted by dedication of the basement church as St. Joseph's Shrine, to be used as seminary chapel and for retreat exercises. 1st Methodist Plans Crusade For Building First Methodist congregation will note the anniversary of its Salem church Sunday, just prior to launching a S130.0UU crusaae for remodeling the 80-year-old structure. It was built in the 1870s and dedicated March 17, 1878. The fund campaign will be from March 23 to April 6, under direc tion of Dr. John Henry Soltman of the Methodist board of mis sions and church extension. Gran, blind dramatic reader, in presenting the story of "The Big Fisherman." Missionary at SDA Service Guest speaker at Johnson Me morial Seventh Day Adventist Church for the 11 o'clock service today will be Dallas Kime, a min ister of the denomination who has served in the foreign mission field for about 35 years. He has occupied positions in various of the Dutch East Indies, including Sumatra, Java, and Bor neo. He and Mrs. Kime have vis ited churches in the interest of the mission program of the church since their return to America. They were among the evacuees from the Indies at the beginning of the Japanese invasion of World War II. The Kimes have relatives in Portland and are widely known in Salem. Keizer Unit Plans 'Youth Challenge' KEIZER The Youth Fellow ship of Keizer Community Church will hold a series of meetings en titled "Challenge to Youth," next Wednesday and Thursday at 7:30 pjn. Lester Gib son, who has been camp director at Bethel Park the past year, has accepted the pastorate of Assem bly of God Church in Gresham. The Rev. and Mrs. Robert Swope and infant son will move into the Gibson house. Swope is pastor of the Brooks Assembly of God Church. :J : . f , ' Daniel Poling To Speak Here Twice Sunday Dr. Daniel A. Poling, widely known Philadelphia minister, will speak at both services Sunday morning at First Presbyterian Church. His brother, Dr. Paul N. Poling, is pastor. " Poling will visit many members of his family, since he is a native of Oregon. He is filling several speaking engagements on the West Coast. Just returned from a trip to observe Presbyterian missions in Guatemala, Poling has been active in foreign mission work since his election as president of the World Christian Endeavor Union in 1925. He also is editor of Christian Herald magazine and has started his duties as chaplain of the Chapel of the Four Chaplains in Philadel phia. This portion of the Baptist Church, with an altar for Catholic, Jewish and Protestant faiths, is a memorial to chaplains who gave their lifebelts to soldiers and died in the World War II sinking of the USS Dorchester. One of the chaplains was Daniel Poling's son, Clark. EVB Members Use Talents' At Jefferson lUttimtn Newt Servle JEFFERSON Many Evangel ical United Brethren Church mem bers are going to Al Meyers to collect their "talents" between now and April 1. This plan was inaugurated last Sunday morning to increase the building fund. Instead of taking an offering, the present fund was opened for distribution and every one was urged to sign up for as much as he thought he could use and multiply before Thanksgiving, 1952. At one dollar per "talent", each person will take his chosen amount and buy, sell, or trade pigs, rabbits, clothes pins, etc., in order to multiply it. On Thanks giving day there will be an in gathering. On Friday, March 21. a group of church young folk will visit Cas cade College in Portland. On Saturday, March 22, a group of men from the church plan to take part in the men's congress banquet at Jennings Lodge on the assembly grounds of the EUB church. NAE Director Slated Sunday The Rev. George L. Ford, Northwest regional director of the : National Association of Evengeli- j cals, will be the speaker at the 1 Sunday morning and evening ser vices of Free Methodist Church. , At the 11 o'clock service he will j explain the stand of the N.A.E. on the action of President Truman in i naming an ambassador to the Va- 1 tican. N. A .E. nationally represents over 10 million evangelical-minded Christians. The organization serves churches of 65 denomina evangelism, radio and television, world relief, Sunday schools and other related interested. Legion to Stress 'Teach Children Religion' Program The American Legion in Oregon has designated March and April as "Teach Children Religion" months and is sponsoring an active program in each Legion post. Capital Post 9, Salem, endorsed the program, emphasizing that it is without any partisan or denom inational connections. Department Chaplain P. M. Blenkir.sop described the purpose of this program as being to awaken all citizens, regardless of their sta tion in life, and without relation to their religious affiliations, to the need for "moral and spiritual con sciousness on the part of our chil dren, who are the citizens of to morrow ,and who will either fill important positions of leadership in the church, home, business and government or else fall by the wayside; based upon the oppor tunities we afford them to under stand their spiritual and moral responsibilities." Post 9 Commander Conrad Paul son emphasized that all individual citizens and organizations were in vited to participate. Model Church"" 3rd Book Written By Mrs. Parrott Mrs. Lora Lee Parrott, wife of the Rev. Leslie Parrott of the Church of the Nazarene of Kelso, Wash., and formerly of Salem, is the author, of "Devotional Pro grams for Women's Groups," a new publication of the Zondervan Publishing House of Grand Rapids, Mich. Mrs. Parrott is also the author of "Meals from the Manse Cook Book" and "Favorite Recipes Cook Book." In this book she has written 18 complete programs all of them new and original for women's groups. They designed to inject new vitality into women' meetings. Sharing Hour On March 23 To Aid World NEW YORK "One Great Hour of Sharing," the 1952 united appeal of 21 Protestant denominations for world relief, will climax the com ing week. Offerings of food, cloth ing, medicines and money will be brought to churches on Sunday, March 23. The appeal will be made in churches over the nation, under sponsorship of the Department of Church World Service, National Council of Churches of Christ. More than $6,000,000 in material relief is expected from the offer ings. Most will be used for work in Korea, India, the Near East and Central Europe, where an es timated 30,000,000 people are in dire distress. Early Church Story Slated The story of the early Christian church will be graphically told and pictured Sunday evening at Englewood Evangelical United Brethren Church. Featured will be the mass per secution of the early church un der the Roman emporors and the legalizing of the Christian religion by Constantine. Also the beginning of Papal rule will be explained and its gradual control over Chris tianity will be traced to the Re formation periods. Projected pictures on phases of the early church heroism will be shown, and colored maps will be used to locate major events. Sunday School to Launch Specials Evangelistic Temple, Assembly of God, will launch a pre-Easter Sunday school program Sunday. It includes an attendance chal lenge to San Diego First Assembly of God and an attendance contest within the local school. Appearing Sunday at the church will be Negroes Ben Moring, Big Ten athlete, and Marvin Honory, singer and pianist. Under the direction of Ernest Friesen, the 22-voice male chorus has sung from Vancouver, B. C, to Southern California. An eastern tour is now in the planning Etage.
