The department, through Dr. W. J. Stone, health officer, offer ed its services to aid in recogniz ing a possible epidemic of flu and its direction of spread, as well as to make possible the identification of strains of flu virus. This, said Dr. Stone, might lead to vaccines useful in limit ing the spread. The report said many school absences have occurred over the state, due to flu, including as many as 25 per cent missing at various times from schools in Willamina, Amity and Dayton. Other spots included Burns, Eu gene and Klamath Falls. Although reported cases of flu were not considered unusually numerous for this time of year in Marion County, there was re port Wednesday of considerable absence among state employes at the Capitol, due to influenza. Commenting on health depart ment services available, Dr. Stone said his office stands ready to cooperate in obtaining speci mens of throat washings and whole blood, for submission to the University of Oregon Medical School laboratory. He pointed out that information so obtained would be of limited value as to treatment of patients already ill, but might help prevent the spread. He said health authorities do not recommend the use of com mercially available Influenza vaccines to control the disease as a public health measure, par tially because strains of the disease vary so much and need different control measures.
