Thursday at the home of Mrs. L. I. Mickey. A dessert luncheon is planned. Central Howell Mrs. Oliver Stefen and Miss Ellen Steffen are spending several weeks in Cali fornia. Mrs. Rosina Steffen is staying with her daughter, Mrs. Lena Clark, while they are gone. Brash Collere The Brush Col lege Extension Unit will meet at 10:15 a. m. Thursday at the home of Mrs. Wilfred Lantis on route 8. Everyone is welcomed to attend Cost of the meal will be divided among those present. Those at tending are to bring their own table service. Orchard Heights Howard Blankley has arrived home follow ing his discharge from the service. He served 18 months, mostly over seas. Pedee Mrs. J. W. McCormack was surprised by a group of friends on her birthday Thursday. Present were Mrs. Mollie Lacey, Mrs. Rufus Dodge, Mrs. William Pease, Mrs. A. L. Bur bank, fir. Mabel Stanton, Mrs. Maud Bur bank and Mrs. Francis Dyer. Union Hill Mrs. William Lens man will be hostess to the Union Hill Home Economics Club at her home Wednesday 2 p. m. Mrs. Henry Peters, will preside. Mrs. Henry Hansen will be in charge of the program which will con sist of patriotic numbers. Pedee Paula Baker is now liv ing in Salem where she is em ployed at the civil service office. Middle Grove Associated Clubs of Middle Grove will sponsor a "hard times" costume party at the schoolhouse at 8 p. m. Friday. A basket social will be held, also, with baskets exchanged rather than sold. Marlon Forks Mrs. Rie Bing ham has been very ill again at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Scott Young. The Home-Cooking Club held Its fifth meeting at the home of Mrs. Wilbert Homann. Dorrein Anderson and Shirley Homann gave the demonstration. Middle Grove The Livestock 4-H Club has chosen the name "Triple F 4-H Club." The club met Feb. 7 with Robert Schafer. Gaylene VanCleave and Cheryl Doty are members. George" Dar land was appointed yell leader. Next meeting will be March 6 at Sammy Myers' home. Jeffersoa The Short Dozen 4-H Cooking Club will meet Wed nesday, Feb. 13 at the home of Mrs. James Adams, leader. Teddy Cooper and Donna Van DeVenter will demonstrate cookie making. Hubbard Muriel Brown has been elected yell leader of the Super Duper 4-H Cooking Club. North Howell Kathleen Howe Is president of the Sing Sewers 4-H Club. Legion At Silvrton Fete Stayton Statesman News Set-flee SILVERTON-t-Delbert Reeves Post and Unit, American Legion, were hosts to members of the Stayton post and unit Monday night. Tne party was in recogni tion of a membership drive in which the Stayton folk bested Sil verton. i More than 93 attended the event at which Ralph Francis, as com mander and Mrs. Francis, as unit president, were official hosts. Al so in attendant were Art John son and his ritual team from Sa lem -Post 9. The latter group was in charge of innitiation of new post members. A total of 18 new pledges were named at the post meeting. At the unit, meeting, presided over by Mrs.! Francis, members voted to pay for a tonsilectomy for a Silverton youth, and to send Mrs. Harry Kuch, unit child wel fare chairman,1 to the Child Wel fare Conference to be held at The Dalles Feb. 23-24. Tt will be held Saturday night, .ollecto Co-eds, women's hon orary, and Wolf Knights, men's honorary at OCE, each choose a sweetheart to reign at the ball. The Wolf Knights name an OCE woman on the basis of friendli ness, service to the college, ap pearance, activities and scholar ship. The Collectos use the same criteria to choose an OCE man. Theme of the dance, highspot of the social season here. Is always secret until the evening of the ball. Names of the Sweethearts also are never revealed until Coronation Hour during the dance. High temperature for the month was 38 degrees, and 18Vt inches of snow fell during 21 days. The snow level at its highest was 5ft feet It read three feet Monday. The snow is melting fast, but skiing is still good at Hoodoo Bowl with all tows running over the week ends. Road conditions were good Monday. Matthes LAKE LABISH Graveside ser vices were held for Mary E. Mat thes at Salem Monday. She was born in Minnesota and spent the last 50 years in the Northwest and California. Mrs Matthes, wife of the late George R. Matthes, an Eastern Oregon wheat rancher, is survived by one grandson and two great-grandsons. Her daughter, Mrs. Marie Han sen died last year in Portland. Guy DeLay SILVERTON Services for Guy DeLay will be held at 2 p. m. Wed nesday at the Ekman Mortary here with the Rev. Douglas Harrell officiating. Interment will be at Eugene. DeLay, prominent in val ley sport circles, died unexpected ly here Sunday. May Howard PEDEE Final rites for May Howard, 67, former valley resi dent, were held Tuesday at Oak land, Calif, where she lived. She was born at Independence and at tended schools at Oak Point and Eola. Survivors Include a sister, Mrs. Mollie Lacey, Pedee; and a brother, J. Lemuel Howard, Em mett, Idaho. Four vehicles have been stolen during the past week. At least two of the thefts have been attributed to escapees of the MacLsren School for Boys, au thorities reported. The car of E. A. Buchanan was taken while parked in front of the public library but the thieves went only a few blocks before running out of gasoline. They then presumably took a station wagon from the home of Charles B. Cornwell and drove to Portland where the vehicle was involved In a wreck with four other con veyances. The automobile of Fred Sch- lack was stolen from Its parking place at the Birds Eye Cannery and the thieves made their way as far as Bickelton, Wash., where they were also involved in a wreck. The Clyde Edwards car was stolen from its garage or the Front Street cut-off near the Pacific Highway intersection and was lat er recovered by Woodburn Police after it had been abandoned on Boones Terry Road.
