10 The Statesmcm, ScIeirL Oregon, Monday t&taxarr 4, 1832 Winnie Jlldd's Escape Baffles Arizona Police PHOENIX, Ariz. WPHBaffled po lice were without a single major clue Sunday as they pressed their search for red-headed Winnie Ruth Judd, the wily trunk murderess who broke out of the State Hos pital for Insane Sunday night. "We've run up against a blank wall," said Sheriff L. C. Bois of Maricopa County. "We're checking every possible place we think she might go, but have no new devel opments." Boies said all border crossing points, all main roads and homes of her former friends and ac quaintances were being watched. Winnie Ruth, 48, was committed to the hospital in 1933, two years after she killed two girl friends and shipped their dismembered bodies to Los Angeles in a trunk and suit case.. Her latest break for freedom, the fifth since she entered the in stitution, was apparently well planned. She slid down a 48-foot rope from the window of a third story tower of the ward to which she was confined. Attendants said the rope, made from restraining har nesses and clothing, reached the ground. Picked Door Lock While 93 other patients watched television in a darkened second floor ward, Mrs. Judd picked the lock of a door leading to the tower. Once there, she removed screws from a heavily-screened window, dropped the rope and slid to the ground. To get out of the hospital grounds she had to scale a nine foot fence topped by three strands of barbed wire. Dr. A. H. Wolff, clinical director, told police that four attendants in formed him they saw a black sedan with California license plates parked near the fence about the time Mrs. Judd vanished. Parked Close to Ward "There were two women in the car, and the attendants told me it was parked as close to Mrs. Judd's ward as possible," Dr. Wolff said. It was only last Nov. 29 that Mrs. Judd made her fourth escape. That time she used a rope ladder fashioned from electric iron cords and rags to climb down from a window. She was recaptured near the downtown section of Phoenix within 24 hours. MONDAY'S BROADCASTS Pacific Standard Time Kilocycles: KSLM 1390. KOCO 1490. KOIN 970. I 1220 U I JO 42 Candidate of Both Parties See 'Victory' By The Associated Press Party confidence in the eventual outcome in the still -distant presi dential election radiated from both national camps. Republican and Democrat, Saturday. Guy Gabrielson, chairman of the Republican National com tee, asked what Democratic can didate he considered "really most formidable," replied: "I think we will lick them all, as a matter of fact, or any one they might put up." He made his comments during an NBC TV pro gram. Equally confident was Frank E. McKinney, chairman of the Demo cratic National Committee, speak ing in Detroit. He said: "Our record and the sorry rec ord of the Republican Party, are the surest guarantees of a Demo cratic victory." These expressions of confidence came as both Democratic and Re publican candidates for the presi dential nomination carried their campaign to the country. Taft in Kentucky Sen. Taft of Ohio, invaded Ken tucky in his presidential drive, with an obvious eye on the border state's votes in the Republican nominating convention. Sen. Kefauver, the Tennessee Democrat, opened his campaign for the presidential nomination with a speech at Detroit at a gen eral Democratic rally. Meantime, President Truman kept his own counsel on whether he will run, but said he expects to do a lot of campaigning to get the "truth" before the voters. In a letter in "The Democrat" a Party organ, he predicted a cam paign of "distortion' by the Re publicans. Back Truman California's most powerful Democrats voted unanimously at a Los Angeles meeting to back President Truman for re-election. A slate of delegates will be se lected to oppose in the California June primary a group backing Kefauver for the Democratic nomination. In St. Paul, Minn., Harold E. Stassen began his Minnesota cam paign with a challenge to Taft to get into the Republican presiden tial fight in that state. He said this would give the people of Minnesota a "thorough choice" of candidates, as both he and Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower are entered. He repeated a pre vious prediction neither Eisen hower nor Taft could win the GOP nomination. Needlecraft 5 Ck' ..A. ' 2. y& . V i NDW I LRV ME DDNtt AWIA HANO THIS over Baby's crib!
