Jefferson The Dale Jenness family has moved into a new four-bedroom house on the high way, just east of the overhead crossing. Jenness built the house on a half-acre tract. Silverton C. A. Hande Jr, a Silverton fireman for 15 years, has resigned, due to press of other duties. He is a councilman and the newstate semi-pro base ball commissioner. Col. John George In Vets' Hospital SILVERTON Lt. Col. John George is at the Veterans' hospi tal, Portland, recovering from a severe case of influenza he con tracted on his return trip from Korea where he was advisor to a Korean division. While Col. George, with Mrs. George (the former Lil lian Dahl) make their home at Eugene, the family has lived for a number of years at both Silverton and Salem. Their daughter, Sharon, who attended school here during her grade school years, is now a sophomore at the University of Oregon. Mrs. George is a sister of Mrs. C. B. Anderson. The colonel re turned from Korea to Portland Thursday. Mrs. Renaud Host To Swegle Women SWEGLE Swegle Neighbors Club met Thursday with Mrs. E. J. R. Renaud on Market St. Co hostesses were Mrs. George Shull, Mrs. Fredrick Smally and Mrs. Grant Bowder. Guests were Mrs. Elsie Hale of Hope, B. C, Mrs. C. B. Johns and Mrs. Edith Koutny of Salem. The February meeting will be with Mrs. Clifford Avery. Mrs. Renaud returned the past week from Hope, B. C, where she had been called by the illness of her father. Election of officers, the annual oyster sup per and the showing of the mem bership's fishing pictures are all features. Speaker is Phil Schnei der of the state game commission. Bill Bloch is slated as chief of the oyster supper, to be assisted by Mr. and Mrs. George Christen son, Mr. and Mrs. Al Gribble and Mr. and Mrs. Clark Bachman. The Fortmiller - Fredericksen funeral directors are in charge of arrange ments Lou Van Horn was born on Sept. 20. lflOO. in WauDDello. Iowa, and was married to Frank Zarones at Marshall Town, Iowa on Aug. 29, 1920. Mr. and Mrs. Zarones came to Albany in 1939, and Mrs. Za rones had taken a prominent part in civic affairs. She was a past president of the American Legion Auxiliary; was a board member artrl one of the original members instrumental in founding the Al bany Symphony Orchestra; was ac tive in Girl Scout work; and at the time of her death was presi dent of the board of directors of Alnha Omieron Pi sorority of Ore gon State College. She was also a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Surviving besides her widower are three children, Eugene Za rones, student at University of Oregon, Richard Zarones with the U. S. Coast Guard stationed in Connecticut, and Dona Zarones at home. Her mother, Mrs. Mary E- Van Horn of Albany, and a brother, Hal Van Horn of Salt Lake City, Utah, also survive. Mrs. Anna W. Riley ALBANY Funeral services for Mrs. Anna Riley, 71, who died in the Mary Ellen Nursing Home in Lebanon on Jan. 16, were held from the Brownsville Baptist Church, Sunday, Jan. 20, at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. Ralph Wolverton of ficiated. Burial was in the Oak ville Cemetery. Born Anna Wave Sherer, at Tangent on Sept. 28, 1880, she had spent her entire life in Tangent, Al bany and Brownsville, and was a daughter of David and Rebecca Nanny Sherer, Oregon pioneers. In Tangent on Oct. 8, 1902, she was married to Cleveland C. Riley who died in November, 1949. Mrs. Riley was a member of the Brownsville Baptist Church. Surviving is one son, Is-ldon Riley of Portland, three grand children, Vernon Haight of Dal las and Kathleen Riley and David Hall of Portland; two great grand children Denny and Christie Riley of Dallas; and-a brother Elmer Sherer of Tangent. Mary R. Beebe ALBANY Mary R. Beebe, 36, died in the Albany General Hos pital Jan- 18, following a lingering illness. Funeral services will be held from the Fisher Home at 10:30 o'clock, Monday, Jan. 21. Rev. George Huber, pastor of the Methodist Church of which she was a member, will officiate. Bu rial will be in Riverside. Born in Sullivan County, Ind., on Sept. 8 1915, Mary Beebe came to Oregon in 1927, and had lived in Albany, Corvallis and Salem. Surviving are her parents, Mr. and Mrs- William Street of Albany, two brothers William B. Street of Long Beach, Calif., and Dick Street of Corvallis; and two sis ters, Mrs. Marjory Prosperi of Long Beach Calif., and Mrs. Anita Handley of Corvallis. Mrs. Gertrude Major McMINNVILLE Funeral serv ices will be held Tuesday, Jan 22 at 2:30 p. m. from Macey's chapel for Mrs. Gertrude Major, long time area resident, who died here Saturday. Burial will be in Ma sonic Cemetery. 22, 1876, she moved to North Da kota as a child and was married there in 1895 to Thomas M. Major. The couple came to Oregon in 1920. Scrap Metal Drive Slated At Woodburn SUteimaa News Service WOODBURN The Woodburn council of Knights of Columbus will conduct a scrap metal drive In Woodburn council and sur rounding area starting immediate ly. Grand Knight Tom Gorman Jr. has appointed KiUian Smith as chairman, assisted by Clair Nibler and Al Cowan. The campaign will be conducted in accordance with the national scrap metal drive and all metal will be accepted with the exception of car bodies and tin. All persons having any scrap to donate are asked to pile it on the grounds in the rear of the Catholic Church. Proceeds from the drive will be used for the bene fit of the St. Luke's School fund. On Monday, Jan. 21, at 8 p. m., all K. C. members who have trucks will meet at Killian Smith's Ap pliance Store to plan a pickup drive for those who are unable to bring in their scrap. The pickup will start at 9 a. m. Sat., Jan. 26. A meeting will be held Wednes day evening at the May Furniture Store to recruit new members and a joint initiation with the St. Paul Council will be held Sunday, Feb. 17, at St. Paul. Al Cowan is chair man of the membership committee for the local council. Installing officers were Mrs. John Campbell and Mrs. Chester Stewart. Fire Department To Form Reserve Statesman News Service WOODBURN Organization of a firemen's reserve Is underway ir. Woodburn by members of the local fire department under the direction of Fire Chief Joe Sowa and Assistant Chief Floyd Maricle. The first meeting of the group will be on Thursday evening, Jan. 31, at 8 p.m. It is planned to hold one meeting each month at which time reserves will be trained in methods of fire fighting by mem bers of the department. Reserves will be used to aug ment the regulars in cases where necessary. Silverton Lions Win Dimes Contest Statesman New Service SILVERTON Lion's club mem bers topped Junior Chamber of Commerce members in the March of Dimes block-of-dimes by more than $200, according to the count completed late Saturday night. Total for the Lions Club was $525 against the $305.50 made by the Junior Chamber of Commerce the week previous. Jimmy Chan chair maned the Lion's club drive. . Next Saturday the Rotary club promised to beat Lion's club, if not the two together, says Jonas Byberg, Silverton March of Dimes chairman as well as a member of the Rotary club.
