PARIS 0P-Th United States announced Wednesday It will present Important new proposals on control of atomic energy to the newly created U. N. Disarmament Commission when the commis sion "begins work in New York In a few weeks. U. S. Ambassador Ernest A. Gross told the 60-nation political committee his delegation could not decide whether revised pro posals for atomic energy put up by Foreign Minister Andrei Y. Vishinsky last Saturday repre sented "a step backward or a step fprward." Improvements include widening and graveling of 4,792 feet of the road. County Surveyor A. D. Grah am said right-of-way markers show telephone and power lines will have to be moved and several trees felled to make room for the work. Parents Organize At Baker School About 60 parents organized a Baker School Mothers and Dads Club at a meeting Tuesday night. With Mrs. Wayne Hadley act ing as temporary chairman, the parents named a nominating com mittee ahd selected the third Tuesday of each month as a meeting date. Harry B. Johnston, assistant superintendent of schools, ex plained the types of parents or ganizations within the school sys tems. The Mothers and Dads Club was selected from the list. There are 75 children enrolled in the school's first, second and third grades. Willamette Second At Speech Tourney Willamette University took sec ond place in the Town Meeting speech tournament sponsored Monday and Tuesday by Vanport College of Portland. It was the university's highest placing in the years they have participated. Thirteen colleges ert tered the tournament. Individual honors went to El liott Motschen backer, third place; Earl Atkinson, fifth, and Tom Scheidel eight; among the 39 speakers. Jim Wood placed third in the contest' for best student moderator. Brown Hired by Portland Chamber Jack Brown, former Statesman advertising department employe, has become conventions manager with Portland Chamber of Com merce. Angel hop men held an annual joint meeting at the Chamber of Commerce Wednesday night. It was similar to a meeting held earlier in the day at Independence for hop growers of that district. Elected to represent the Silver ton district on both the hop grow ers advisory committee of the U. S. Hop Growers Association, and the U. S. Hop Control Board was Herman Goschie. Alternate is Wal ter Von Flue . Representing Mt. Angel on the two committees will be Ed Willig. Donald area hop men will meet at 1:30 pjn. today at the Donald Hall, and those from the St. Paul area at 7:30 o'clock tonight in the St. Paul City Hall. These two will complete the meetings in this area. The same speakers which spoke at Independence Wednesday spoke Wednesday night at Silverton, and will speak at both the Donald and St. Paul meetings. Lyons Man Bags Second Cougar In Three Days Lei and L. Manning, 27, Lyons, bagged his second cougar in about 10 days and appeared with the pelt to collect S60 bounty Wednes day. He said he shot the big 6 M -foot cat Monday with a 22 rifle slug behind the eye after treeing it with dogs "above Mill City." He re ceives $10 from the Marion County Clerk and (50 from the State Game Commission for his efforts. Draft Office to Close Saturdays Marion County selective service office will no longer be open Saf urday mornings, it was announced Wednesday. Mrs. Edna Wilhelm, clerk, said regular weekday hours of 8 ajn. to 5 p.m. would continue for the office at 231 N. Liberty St. The draft office Wednesday sent a group of 18 men to Portland for physical examinations. They will return here today.
