From the din -I ette and the kitchen counter where formica tops are an old story to coffee I tables and end tables, the easy-j to-maintain minated plastic is now in - the showpiece class. The reason fori the coming pop ularity of this material is the improvement in textures. Espe cially in wood finishes is the .parlor touch" important. Occa sional table manufacturers have found that newly - developed wood grains, which are really photographed on the plastic that tops the wood surface of the ta ble, no longer have the shine that r 7. L -,-r 2L1 was once a give-away of the plastic top. You can still have the shine in a satin luster or the shiny solid colors but it Is no longer seen in the oak, mahogany, birch, walnut and other favored grains. Forest Wilson, Chicago indus trial designer, has created a group of coffee, end and occa sional tables, some with maga zine or book racks, that have the formica plastic tops. In the dinette tables, the new notes are correlated tops and plastic upholstery. Two new de signs are being launched, one a : free form line design against a contrasting background and the other a sort of finger-paint tex tured look. Both are available in a variety of colors. Among the new dual purpose pieces with plastic formica tops "is a coffee table that raises to dining or card table height. It is'shown with wood grain top.
