Staff member Ray Stose is pinch -hitting for the eonralescinc Harger, who will likely be re leased from the hospital in another week or two.) By RAY STOSE Fishing has varied lately according to the weather. The Alsea River was reported as producing well last weekend. One man claimed he saw eight fish taken out of one hole near Tidewater by one group of fishermen, and then the next day only three were caught from this same place. When fishing the Alsea your luck can change pretty fast. So much logging is going on near the main stream and some tribu taries that it doesn't take much rain to muddy it up. This time of year it's a good idea to call one of the river resorts for conditions of the stream before traveling there. This, of course, holds true with any of the fishing over on the Coast. A dollar or two spent calling a few different places may make the difference of whether you bring home a steelhead or not. Duck hunting was spotty the first part of the week due to clear weather, but has improved quite a bit since the rains started again. Plenty: 6f ducks have been seen around the sloughs and ponds south of Independence. Some nimrods have been doing good by putting a boat in the Luckimute River at the second bridge and drifting down to wbere.it empties into the Willamette. Rave noticed many hunters shooting before and after the legal hours-during this season. In their hunting manual is a table showing the time of sunrise and sunset for each day, and also there is instruc tions when to start and when to quit. A few minutes spent checking the time table and then following the instructions will make every one's hunting more enjoyable. Most areas are watched closely, so don't spoil your hunting by having to pay a high price for your duck or goose. Remember, this coming weekend will be the last chance for those who like to hunt the waterfowl, as the season closes December 31. Jefferson Skeda Sheridan Quintet JEFFERSON - (Special) - The Jefferson Lions will play Sheridan Hisrh in a basketball game here Friday night, with Bee teams slat ed to start the program in a seven o'clock preliminary. Sheridan's strong varsity holds a win over Coach Fred Graham's team thus far this season. Probable starters for Jefferson will be Jim Blackwell, Lee Cam eron, Dale Wattenbarger. John Wright and K.
