Beaten only by Minnesota to an upset, the "perennial South eastern conference champions re turn to the top rune practically was assured when they came through with a smashing 98-60 triumph over DePaul after crush ing St. John's, 81-40. Exactly 106 sports writers and sportscssters from all parts of the nation participated in the poll and 41 of them named Kentucky as their top team. St. John's, on top a week ago with 36 first place nominations, received none this time and skittered all the way down to seventh. Only a rebound ing 69-54 win over previously un counquered Vanderbilt prevented the Redmen from dropping out of the top -ten altogether. Big Edge for Cats Kentucky had a clear edge over runner-up Illinois, which grabbed 21 first -place votes to - advance from its third place position a week ago. On the basis of points, the Wildcats (4-1) outscored the Illini (5-0)' 863 to 827. Washington, favored to capture the Pacific Coast crown, vaulted from eighth to third with the aid of 17 first place nominations and 623 points. Only a split in two games with Utah mars the Hus kies' eight-game record. Another strong vote-getter was unbeaten Kansas. The Jayhawks, who dumped Southern California, 76 55, for their seventh win Satur day, moved up from seventh to fourth on the strength of 13 top ranked ballots and 568 points. The top ten underwent a whole sale upheaval. Everybody . ex changed places with one excep tion. Seton Hall (6-0) of South Orange, N. J-, remained in tenth spot. St. Louis and North Carolina State, each with two defeats, drop ped out of the elite list. They were replaced by New York uni versity (11-0) and Notre Dame (6-0). Vlsleta Climb The New York Violets, with the longest winning streak among the nation's major colleges, skipped from 11th to sixth, right behind fifth-ranked Indiana, as a result of impressive wins over highly rated Holy Cross and Oklahoma. The Hoosiers also gained stature via an overtime victory over Kan sas State. Indiana (50) was sixth last week. Kansas State's second defeat in eight games dropped the Wildcats three notches to eighth, just ahead of Notre Dame and Seton Hall. The top ten, with first place counting 10 points, second place for nine points, etc., follows: (first place votes in parentheses): PoinU 8S3 827 S23 368 527 1 Kentucky (41) t. niKHMl (21) 3. Dec. 25-(P)-A lead editorial in Pravda today gave evi dence of the tremendous emphasis now being placed on snorts in the Soviet in view of the coming Olympics. , This editorial called for the wid est and most intense work in de veloping Soviet athletes in breadth by means of drawing in new millions of athletes into mass sports organizations and in depth by means of stress on attain ment of new Soviet union and world's record by outstanding Sportsmen. It called on party and komso mol and trade union organizations to give their fullest support to mass sports and told Soviet ath letes once more to go out and win world championships in all important sports. Winter Sports Stressed In particular, this editorial stressed the tremendous possibili ties for continued development of winter sports, especially skiing, skating and hockey, in the USSR. At the same time, the editorial referred to backwardness In cer tain lines of sports including men's speedskating and to some extent, skiing, and demanded these be overcome this year. Western observers here could not make up their minds whether to interpret Pravada's lead edi torial as a sign the Russians will or will not participate in the com ing winter Olympics in Oslo in February. The balance of opinion here still is that Russia quite likely will send a selected team without at tempting at this time to enter all events. Look and Learn By A C Gordon By A. C. Gordon 1.
