Hopkins Free On $500 Bail Joseph Hopkins, charged with embezzling Salem veterans hous ing colony : funds, was released from Marion county jail Saturday by Circuit Judge Rex Kimmell after posting $500 bail. The former manager of the pub lic housing colony in east Slem is charged with the theft of rental funds totaling $10,811. W. J. Braun said that no appointment Housing authority, which controls the colony funds, said that Hopkins was covered by a $5,000 surety bond. Some of the missing money has been recouped, Braun said. Braun sojd that no appointment of a new manager for the hous ing colony has been made y't. Several applicants are being screened. A temporary manager is in charge. Services for- Kenneth Smith Set Thursday Kenneth Jewell Smith, 27, Sa lem resident since 1943, who was killed Friday night when a prod uce truck he was driving plunged off the highway south of Ashland, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday In Clough-Barrick chapel. He had been employed since January by Exley Produce Express company of Portland. He had been employed as a driver for the state highway department in Salem for a year and one-half. Previously he was employed at Paulus Broth ers packing company a short time before entering military service and again after his return. He served two and one-half years with the marines in the South Pacific theater. Smith was born Dec. 19, 1924, at Raymond, Wash., moving to California as a small boy with his parents. He came to Salem early in 1943 at the time of his mar riage to Gloria Stender. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Gloria Smith, Salem; daugh ter, Miss Waunda Smith, age 3; son, Gordon Jewell Smith, l1; father, Curtis J. Page Named to Hospital Board Urlin Page was elected Friday night to fill the unexpire term of Mai Rudd on the Salem Memorial hospital board of directors. Page will serve until 1953. Elected to new terms on the board were Floyd Bowers, Charles Heltzel, Loyal Warner and Ken Perry. Each will serve for three years.
