Stocks Falter After Opening On Rise Note NEW YORK, Dec 20 -CP- Af ter a highly favorable beginning, the stock market was swept Into a diverse mixture of sains and losses. The range of prices at the close went from around 2 points lower to a point higher, with the usual exceptions. One of these was UJS, Rubber which advanced 4ft at 75. It was in heavy demand the greater part of the day and was the fifth most actively traded Issue with 12,900 shares changing hands. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks was unchanged at $98.30 with the industrial com ponent down 20 cents, rails un changed, and utilities up 10 cents. Trading came to 1,340,000 shares in contrast with yester day's rising market when 1,510, 000 shares changed hands. Curb stocks were mixed with trading coming to 300,000 shares as against 400,000 shares yester day. Grains Close Mostly Higher CHICAGO, Dec. 20 -iff)- Most grain contracts ended higher on the board ,of trade today after a session of cross-currents produced some rather weird price move ments. One factor in the day's trade was the ending of dealings in all December contracts. December corn and oats eased while wheat fell quite rapidly in the closing minutes. However, December rye ended strong while lard was firm. Wheat closed 24 lower to Vi higher, corn lower to Vz higher, oats Va lower to 1 cent higher, rye 1 to higher, soybeans -l4 higher and lard unchanged to 8 cents a hundred pounds higher. Rep. Hounsell Files For Senate Post State Rep. John P. Hounsell, Hood River county, Thursday filed in the state elections bureau here for state senator from Hood River and Wasco counties. He is a re publican. The position is now held by Sen. Ben Musa, The Dalles democrat, who said he would not seek re election. Portland Grain PORTLAND.
