- FedsStymied On TV Matter 'Cast Restrictions Held Illegal Though WASHINGTON,' N6V. 23 - (JPf : The justice department made it clear tonight that it regards re strictioha of big time college foot ball fames illegal, but that it can not do anything about it immedi ately. , ... The department made public a telegram to Governor Lawrence W. Wetherby of Kentucky. The governor had asked that Attorney General UcGrath move against the National Collegiate Athletic association tor refusing to permit the televising of tomorrow's Tennessee-Kentucky game at Lexing ton. The department's wire, signed by Newell A. Clapp, acting chief of : the anti-trust division, asked that the governor take note of the anti-trust suit filed in Philadel phia on October 9 against the Pro fessional National Football league and its member clubs for similar broadcasting restrictions. ActUa Hinges an Suit Clapp said It was hoped that that case will establish the appli cability of the anti-trust laws to such situations and clearly indi cated. In talking to reporters, that action will be taken against col legiate groups if the department can win the Philadelphia suit. Victor Kramer, who directs anti-trust litigation, told newsmen that when ' department officials held conferences with NCAA offi cials several weeks ago, they gave It as their opinion-that the ban on telecasts "is unlawful." He said this was not an official ruling, but represents the views held by the anti-trust experts. , NCAA instituted an experi mental program this fall of limit ing the number of telecast games in an effort to check on TVs ef- feet on the games generally. Mt. Angel Eyes Cage Season MT. ANGEL. Nov. 23-(Special) -The ML Angel Preps, with five lettermen among the squad or 35 aspirants out for the team, are pre paring for the 1931-52 basketball season under Coach Gene Bar rett. Lettermen are John Gorman, Francis Piatz. Ray Wellman, Roy Palmer and Charles Schumacher. Only Piatz played & a regular last Barrett feels that the Preps will be big enough this year but is con cerned over the lack of experi ence. Wellman is the biggest play er, on the team at 6-4. Gorman is 5-10, Piatz 5-s, Palmer 5-7 and Schumacher 5-9. ,; Other leading prospects and their heights are Harry Erwert 5-9, Loren Free 5-8, Ralph Kim- linger 6-1. Jim Traeger 5-8, Ron Schmidt 6-3, Wes Lightfoot 6-1, Jim Zauner 6-1, Leo Buchheit 5-6, Larry Gorman 5-6 and Tom Trae ger 6-0. ? CoHe lln Peat Boulet1 MEDFORD J Nov. 23 (Special) -The sixth annual Pear Bowl foot ball classic, an 'annual benefit game involving the champions of the Northwest and Far West conferences, will get under way in Medford high stadium Saturday night at eight o'clock. Marching units and bands will start a 30-minute performance 1 : - Pear Bowler of pageantry at 7:30 pjn. The annual game, played for the benefit of the Shrine Hospital for Crippled Children in Portland, will see Pacific University I of Forest Grove opposing the California Ag gies of Davis. Dr. Paul Stagg's Badgers are , co-champions of the Northwest conference with Lewis & Clark, and fthe Aggies swept through the Far West conference in easy fashion.'t Lewis & Clark defeated San Francisco State In last year's game and in 1949 Pacific thumped the Aggies 33-13. According to dopest- ers the Saturday clash looms as a tossup. however. A crowd of around 5000 is ex pected for the struggle which Is under the ' sponsorship I of Hillah Temple of the Shrine.
