Judge's Accusations
Denied by Schools
By Junes Derlla
' NEW YORK, Nov. 2WVThe
judge who handed out jail sen
tences in the basketball bribery
scandal told the nation's colleges
today it was their task. not the
district ttorney's to keep their
athletics clean. , "
Judge Saul S. Streit followed
up his sentencing of a fixer and
former players by declaring: ""Un
less the colleges take heed, all the
efforts of the district attorneys,
the state and the entire exposure
will serve, no purpose whatso
ever. Sehoob Make Denial
The tall, 93-year-old bachelor
jorist commented to newsmen in
his chambers in the face of dis
claimers from officials of some of
the colleges he named yesterday
as over-emphasizing commercial
ism or winking at athletes' schol
astic abilities.
, The condition exists," Streit
said, "and denials, reports and
surveys will serve no purpose un
less the college administrations
change their present methods."
He scarcely had spoken before
the College of the City of New
York announced it was adopting
a rigid new policy that automati
cally would eliminate CCNY as
an athletic power in tne iuture."
Streit yesterday named Mary
land, Oklahoma. Texas? Texas A
& M. Southern Methodist, Fenn
lylvania, Tennessee and Kentucky
as examples of schools over-em
phasfzing football and drew
quick reaction concerning some.
Maryland Probe Doe
In Maryland, Gov. Theodore
McKeldin asked for an investiga
tion of aid to athletes at theUni
versity of Maryland.
In Knoxville. Coach Bob Ney-
land said Streit's remark that
academic standards 'of athletes are
a laugh "does not apply at Ten
nessee. Neyland said the seholas
tic average of the Tennessee foot
ball squad in 1950-51 "was 20 per
cent above the average of all male
students, for the year. -
