Veterans Lag As Cats Step Up Hoop Drills With the distraction of the foot ball season now out of the way, Willamette university's basketball lS-aaa squad Monday started stepping up preparations for the opening of the 1951-52 campaign against Oregon State here Dee. 1st. Ceech John Lewis will get t o men previously busy with football as additions to his squad. They are Beany Holt, the freshman quarterback whose best sport is said to be the cage game, and Lay ton Gtlson, sophomore post candi date. - Lewis has not been exactly happy with the performance of his veterans in the first two weeks of drills. Most of them have been slow to round into form. COred Stands Oat One of the standouts in Monday ' morning's practice was Daryl Girod. the former Salem high star, who is in the freshman category even though a transfer from Ore gon State. Girod is given a good chance of landing a regular guard spot A much imoroved performer Is Claude NordhOl, reserve guard last season but transferred to a forward post this year. T ; ' The seven lettermen In conten tion for regular jobs are Ted Loder, Doug Logue, Larry Smith, Leu Scrivens, Hugh Bellinger, Nordhill and Dick Brouwer. The souad also includes three varsity reserves from last campaign in Bob Smith, Cliff Girod and Ray Wil liams and two transfers in Dick Mase and Bob Shepard. Coach Milt Baum of the Foxes is faced with a complete rebuilding program after-having lost prac tically his entire 1950-51 varsity via graduation and armed forces calls. The only two returning let termen are six-foot Garv Carter and 5-ID Gaylen Stoltenberg, and Lof the two only Stoltenberg was a regular last season. Varsity aspirants as Baum and Assistant Charley McNatt drill the 50-man squad include Dean TJb ner, Bob Bobbins, Bob Gentry, Leon McCaramon, Bob Warren, Willis Peckham, Don Anderson, Uoyd Mulkey, Jim Ulven, Dave Lynch and Jim Black.
