Taylor Staff Writer, The Statesman Schools take 63.5 per -cent of Marion county's 1951-52 tax dol lar,, but only about one-seventh of the registered voters decide how much money "schools will get, ac cording to tabulations by County Assessor R. (Tad) Shelton. f Last summer 3,533 persons voted for and 1,393 against the $2,777, 903 in Jeviesapproved by districts. The county has approximately 37, 000 registered voters, all eligible to ballot on school taxes. In addition there are the regular levies of non-high districts, the combined- rural elementary and high school districts, the -county school fund of $235,680 which has heretofore come from state income 1ax receipts, and the county school library fund. "Altogether school levies add up to $3,397,604, out of a total county levy of $5,346,- 825. ; Here is how other demands on the tax dollar are proportioned: Cities Total of- $779,592, of which $687,656 is Salem's levy. , County General functions like law enforcement, jaiLoperation, of fices, utilities- and most salaries, totaling $672424. ' Roads Income from state gaso line tax, sale of lands and sale of timber provides for all develop ment of county roads, but market roads require a levy of $162,006. South Keizer special road district levies $966 this year. Courthouse Two levies are accumulating j funds for building the proposed ljew courthouse, with officials still ShoDeful? of starting next year. A 10-year levy garners $75,000 annually within the 6 per cent limitation, while a special two-year levy; voted in 1950 brings in $175,000 per year, f Fire The several riiral fire nro- tectiori districts have taxes total ing $74,137.
