WASHINGTON, Oct. 8 - UPh Some members of the house nub ile works committee have chal lenged the interior department's motives in seeking to build eight fuel burning electric generating plants in the Pacific northwest. Rep. Dondero (R-Mich), ranking republican on the committee,. re leased a summary of the protest. He said it would be filed with the committee today. A majority of the committee on October 3 approved a bill author izing the secretary of the Inter ior to construct the plants. Congress, the report said, has resisted past 1 attempts by the ' in terior department "to assume pub lic utility responsibilities" for sup-d plying all wnoisesale power in areas where it is a partial whole saler of electric energy. The minority group questioned the Interior department's claim that the steam generating plants are necessary for the national de fense. I ' ; ' ' Doubts Listed The statement further said there are "grave doubts on the follow ing points: 1. Whether1 Interior has not "de liberately obstructed" efforts of the City of Tacoma, Wash., and a private utility to get licenses for two hydroelectric projects with i total capacity of 580,000 kilowatts. At no expense to the government, tnese projects would accomplish the same iinning up purpose for the northwest power pool as the 400,000 kilowatt projects the gov ernment proposes to build, the republican ud. , : 2. Whether the department act ed in good faith in view of com mittee testimony that the proposed plants would take from a year to 18 months longer to put in opera tion than would the non-federal hydroelectric projects. i Is Fuel Available? 3. Whether source of fuel for the proposed plants is available. The report said it would be im practical . to use low grade state of Washington coaL It said the only reliable source would be oil which would be "wholly interrupt tible during a defense emergency. 4. Whether "the prospective northwest defense production cris is is not artificial and bureau- cratically inspired.' 5. Whether the aluminum com panies that benefit from cheap, government power in the Pacific northwest shouldn't build their own steam plants to meet addi tional requirements. 6. Whether sufficient efforts SeriatorsTold Details of New f -- .--. i - v . White House l WASHINGTON, Oct. 8 UPh Senators , have assurance . that the remodelled.
