Two homers by Jack Graham and a twe-run double by Harry Malm berg gave the Padres a 4-3 win in the opener. Bob Boyd got four bits and accounted for all of Sac ramento's runs in the Solons 4-2 triumph. Hardly a race on Promoter Mike Carty's card went wimoui at jeasi one spec- tacuiar cracx-up. No one was seriously injured in the spills and spin-outs, but onls because all participant! surely mustl be liv ing charmed lives. TJlarence Smith in his devil-red Ford took down the Class A main event victory finally, beating out by one-eighth of a lap Larry Gardner in his black and yellow 46. car. Don Larson in the No. 1 buggy finished third. Time for the 35 laps was 1133.50 and in notch ing his win Smith took home the "Woodborn Night" trophy. Smith also .distinguished himself in the time': trials by: smashing his own track' record for hard tops with a single lap run of 18.49; seconds. The old -mark was 18.63. - Thirty-six ;nopsM jtuned in, tat the program. Don ijarsonfwon the trophy dash, j eye-lashing Smith and Bob Porter. Time for the three laps was 57.85 f seconds. Smith won the 7-lap first heat overt Wild Bill Hyde and Larson in 2:I4.E5, and then theun began. It was in this second: heat race. won -eventually- by Ben Summers of Seattle, that Fred Golladay in his blue No. 68 car threw! a wheel on the northeast turn. This started a maze of crackups and accidents which prolonged the finish of the entire show until midnight. - Russ Schwerzler in an Oldsmo- bile - won the third heat and Frankie McGowan in. S a Ford copped No. 4. A three-car crackup smack in front of the grandstand highlighted the 10-lap Class C con solation romp, and , Messrs. Schwerzler and McGowan were the stars of the night's most spec tacular pileup on the last lap of the Class B mainer, a 20-lapper. McGowan Waa in front all the way and Schwerzler was trailing him so close that he bumped Frank three or four times in trying to pass. Driving expertly, McGowan wouldn't let - Schwerzler 1 set by. Then as the two rounded the final turn Schwerzler tried to Cut in on McGowan's inside and the two cars locked together. They finally came to a screeching stop with Schwerz lers Olds atop McGowan's Ford. The wreck cost them a 1-1 finish and Bud Robinson, Tinyf Willen berg and Tom; Atwell finished in that order. Danny Hopp had won the Class C event. Both races had other crackups also. i The 44 A" main was restarted twice b e c a u s of half-raising wrecks the first two time. Kenny Dean finally won the smash derby after a personal duel with Hyde after most of the other cars had conked out. .
