Of SHS Band
Victor Palmason, Salem high
school orchestra director, will also
conduct the high school band next
year, it was announced Thursday
by Frank B. Bennett, superintend
ent of schools.
It will be the first time in. recent
years that band and orchestra have
been under the same director. The
assignment was made following
school board hiring of Mrs." Grace
Ericksen, Albany teacher, to head
the instrumental music program in
"West Salem junior high and the
Salem district elementary schools.
The music shift follows the ear
lier resignation of E. Donald Jes
sop as high school band director.
Palmason has conducted the or
chestra since coming to Salem
schools five years ago. He previ
ously taught nrusic in Aberdeen
, schools, has a bachelor of music
decree from University of Wash
ington and "a master's from Port
land university.

The Elsinore theatre becomes veritably an art museum as well as "The
Show Place of the Willamette Valley" starting today. Above, George

lamette .Valley, the Elsinore the
ater in 'Salem observes its 25th
anniversary, starting tonight.
Completed in 1926, the Elsinore
was built by and still is; owned by
George B. Guthrie. Since 1931 it
has been ; operated by Warner
Bros. Theatres, Inc.
Of special interest tonight will
be a broadcast commemorating the
anniversary event over KSLM pre
sented from the Elsinore stage,
and featuring Guthrie, Mayor Al
fred W. Loucks, and others, Man
ager Wallace Cowen ha announc

Scheduled for showing begin
ning tonight is the Howard Hawks
production.; "The Thing From
Another World," released by RKO
Radio pictures. $
On Wednesday next, the Elsin
ore will present Warner Bros, dra
matic triumph, 'I Was A Commu
nist For the F.B.I." starting Frank
Lovejoy j and Dorothy ! Hart, and
taken from; the Saturday Evening
Post feature based oni the true
story of Matt Cyetic. j
Through the early years of the
Elsinore , threatre's operation, a
number of oil paintings were on
display in the great Gothic foyer.
For this 25th anniversary cele
bration, Guthrie, former Portland
attorney ! and now residing near

In celebration of its 25th anniversary, the management of the Elsinore
theatre presents RKO-Radio's epie screen adventure-thriller. The
Thlnr." starting today. In the scene above, the Arctic explorers pre
pare to try to destroy the indestractable menace from another world.

paintings for the enjoyment of the
community and the theatre's pa
trons, i
Among the nearly 50 toibe ex
hibited will be Outstanding sub
jects by foreign artists of the Nine
teenth century.
Of subjects nearer home will be
a Carmel-by-the Sea canvas by the
late Alfred H. Shroff of the univer
sity, painted in 1926; "The Blue
Girl" by the late! Arthur Hazard,
famous American artist; I "Cape
Perpetua" of 1941 by Peter Win
throp Sheffers; "Mount McKinley"
by Sydney Lawrence of 1910; and
the highly acclaimed portrait of
"Crater Lake" (1934) by Marius
Hubert - Robert, j famous French
Iandscapist. ;
The large tapestry and the old
Kermanshah rug are rehung.
The art exhibit will remain
at the theatre for; several days.
