; j .8 Th Statesman. Salem. Oregon, Monday. May 21. 1951 Solons Critical Of New Beef :' t . .,. 1 : Price Ceilings WASHINGTON, May 20 (JFh A government program designed to cut retail beef prices by 10 cents a pound by October. 1 went into effect today amid congressional criticism. Senator Butler (R-Neb.) called the rollback order "confiscation." Declaring that Price Stabilizer Michael V. DiSalle "boasts' that the order will save consumers $700,000,000, Butler said: i . "Cattle feeders will lose that same $700,000,000. That's not sav ing, that's confiscation." DiSalle himself said flatly that In spite of widespread protests "we will not repeal the meat order." No Rationing Nor should the rollback lead to rationing, DiSalle said. Interviewed on NBC's "Meet the Press," the price chief said that under the regulation prices still will be high enough "to bring meat to market. He denied categorically that ra tion books are being prepared or that there is any present intention of rationing meat. But he said that no one could make a long term prediction on that subject in the light of the uncertain world situ ation. DiSalle said he was sure that "a very deep sense of responsibility" on the part of congress would ensure that price and wage control laws, which expire June 30, will be extended. Won't See Change Packers are required under the new price ceiling to buy cattle at prices averaging 10 per cent below January levels. But housewives probably won't notice an immed iate change in their meat costs. The live cattle rollback is de signed to eliminate the squeeze on wholesale and retail beef price ceilings now in effect. Cattle price rollbacks of 4 !4 per cent each have been set for August 1 and October 1. But cattle raisers argue that the ceiling on cattle merely transfers the squeeze from the packers to the-cattle feeders and will cause a 'big drop in beef production. y In today's debate, Reps. Javits (R-N.Y.) and Boiling (D-Mo.) supported the government move to trim back meat prices. Javits contended that rising food costs are forcing city dwellers to lower their living standards while 1 MONDAY'S BROADCASTS Pacific Daylight (Time Kilocycles: KSLM 1390, KOCO 1490. KOIN 970.
