Mrs. Frank Moser of Genesee, Idaho cut the cake; and Miss Margie and Miss Marilyn Schwab passed the guest book. Emit Scharbach and Miss Mar garet Schwab were married at St, Mary's church, Mt. Angel. Both were born and educated in Mt. Angel and lived here until recent years. Mr, Scharbach was employ ed with the Southern .Pacific in "Mt. Angel for many years, later moving to Oregon City and more recently to Woodburn. He v-as one of the early members of the Mt. Angel Volunteer Fire Depart ment of which he is now an honorary member. This unit will have charge of the registration at the Home- makers Festival on April 21. A report from the Three Links meet ing was given and plans discussed for the bazaar which will be held May 11 at the hall. April 23. 1S51 7 Neighbors, Volunteer Firemen Extinguish Blaze in Jefferson Statesmaa Nw Servlca JEFFERSON Prompt action by neighbors and the Jefferson volunteer fire department put out a fire in the Sam Wilson home on Second street Tuesday afternoon before much damage could be done. Mrs. Wilson had turned on. an electric hot plate in the pantry and forgot it. Becoming overheated, the plate ignited the low ceiling, but the fire was put out before it spread to the rest of the house. This is the second fire here in a week:, MEHAMA A reception honor ing the silver wedding anniversary or Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Taylor was held in the club house Sunday. In a hall decorated with cherry blossoms and white snapdragons, guests were received by Mr. and Mrs. Taylor and daughter Mrs Glen Tinney. Jefferson FHA Elects Officers lutnaua Ntwi Servtea JEFFERSON Newly-elected FHA officers are Melba Sweeten, president; Norrene Kreger, vice nresident and reporter; Donna Armstrong, secretary-treasurer; Marion Behrends, historian. The junior class of Jefferson high school is presenting a formal prom honoring graduating seniors on Friday, April 27, at 8 p.m. in the school gym. An Hawaiian or chestra, directed by Charles Nee, tenor solist, has been secured. Nee and his group have appeared on Horace Heidt's talent show. Eighth grade graduation date is May 24 at 2 p.m. in the high school gymnasium. The following seventh grade girls will take part irf 4-H achieve ment day activities at the home of Mrs. Henry Hochspeier Mon day: Ann Wilson, Sue Daulton. Arlene Farmen, June Dye and Ila Stephenson. Barbara Jean Hart and Myrna Page of the sixth grade also will attend this event. The sixth grade is studying the solar system in science,' using films called "The Sky Series." Hal Wynd is teaching them sketch ing and they have made several outdoor sketches. The second grade is working on ABC books. Joan Files has moved to Salem. Vernon Dawson of the first grade is leaving school this week, moving to Lyle, Wash., where his father is employed in a mill. Jack, who is in the navy, is now in New York and expects to be stationed at Norfolk, Va., for the next few months. Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Coin were in Salem Monday to see their grand daughter, Ann Jones, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Jones, who has been in a hospital for the past 12 davs. She is recovering from a ruptured appendix. Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Cochran, ac companied by Mr. and Mrs. George Mills, were week end guests of .Mrs. Cochran's brother-in-law and sister, Lt. Col. Charles T. McCamp- bell at Kelso, Wash. Guests over the week end at the Earl Phelps home were Mr. and Mrs. Dick Hitt of Oakland, Calif. They were enroute to Portland to visit their daughter, Sharon. Mr. and Mrs. William Skelton and son Ned were Sunday guests of the HaTry McKee and Clifford Rich families at Bend. Mr. and Mrs. Glen Cobb and Sonny spent Saturday and Sunday on the coast, south of Newport Jim Wied is in Salem General hospital with an eye Injury. He underwent eye surgery Saturday and again on Tuesday. The pupil of the eye was cut by gravel that was thrown up while wied was catching a big turkey torn on his turkey ranch on Marion road. Wied has had a series of bad luck.' He still walks with a limp from broken leg bones suffered in a tractor ac cident a few years ago. The Jefferson Gun club will hold another shoot Sunday at the Kelly farm southeast of town. Any man interested in trap shooting is invited to attend. A large crowd was out Sunday, Enos Nelson mak ing a record of 25 hits in 25 shots O. N. Sheffield has bought Nora Leuers house on Third street. Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Daniels and four daughters and Mr. and Mrs. Howard Daniels, all of Newberg, were guests Sunday of Mrs. Carrie Hochspeier. Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Freeman and Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Belknap of Talbot fished the Alsea over the week end, each getting a limit catch of trout. Sixty-five pupils in the third and fourth-grades and their teachers, Mrs. Gilbert Looney and Miss Evelyn Hall, and Doug Bradley, bus driver, spent Monday in Cor vallis, visiting the museum, pic nicking in Avery park and listen ing to a rehearsal and broadcast at radio station KOAC. Paul McKee is building a garage for the newly remodeled house on his property on Main street. Glan Cochran and Clausie Am- mon made a fine catch of trout here in the Santiam river Satur day. Mrs. A. C. Hicks suffered heart attack Saturday and was taken to Albany General hospital Sunday evening. She is recuperating and hopes to be able to return home this week. Union Hill The Union HiU community is sponsoring a special blood day Monday, April 23. The mobile unit will be set up in the Union Hill grange hall between 2 and 6 p.m. Residents of Union Hill and adjacent areas are planning to send in 150 donors. Fester Foster clubs are stag ing a pie auction for the Friday night at the community hall at 8 o clock. Those net wishing to buy a whole pie will have the chance to purchase a piece of pie. Coffee will be served free. A musical pro gram has been arranged. Sweet Heme Teachers of the Foster school put on a play in the high school auditorium here Friday night, "Here Comes Charlie." Gate receipts were $91. This money will be used to finish the Foster Com munity hall kitchen which is nearly completed. Mehama Fishing season, wel comed by many, brought discom fort to Mrs. Gladys Cowdry, who suffered a broken ankle on opening day. Struggling safely through rocks and brush along tha river, the bone was broken while crossing a clearing on the way home. Wlllamina The annual dance given by the Willamina fire de partment to raise money is slated May 12. The Top Hatter's orches tra from McMinnville will provide music for the dance, which will be held at the VFW Memorial halL Wlllamina The VFW auxiliary will sponsor a dance Saturday eve ning at the Memorial hall with the Smith orchestra providing music. Willamina The Willamina Civic club will have its spring luncheon Thursday. April 26, at tha Rebekah hall. State officers of the Oregon Federation of Women's clubs will be -guests. D, brother-in-law of Mrs. Tom Brown of Hopewell died at his home April 13. Dorothy Brown has. been visiting her uncle and family in Vermillion and will stay there for some time. ' Dennis Cook, grand nephew of Mrs. Tom Brown, started to Hope well school Monday and is mak ing his home with 'Mrs. Brown until his family is settled in Laurel. ' Mrs. May Moe, mother of Mrs. Howard Stephens, Lt in the hos pital in McMinnville. She had'been with -Mrs. Stephena. since March. r Sharon McKenney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. j. D McKenney, fell from her bicycle on her way to school Friday, Injuries were minor. Albert Fleming has gone east to take delivery.. of an airplane. He plans to be away a week. Beverly Brown is staying with Mrs Fleming during his absence. Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Loop are build ing a new home. The porch of the old house has been torn off and the new one will be built directly Hn front of the old one. Loop plans to do most of the work himself.
