March 23. 1SS1 ' elect Stocks Advance in Das Trading NEW, YORK, March 22-aV Most . major segments of the stock market got the benefit of a selec tive advance today with gains run sing to as much as $3 a share. . There were set-backs as "well, However, and losses extended to around a dollar a share. ". Gainers held a small numerical edge over the losers and the plug signs were . generally larger than the minus marks. " . Air lines started the ball rolling with : gains running to nearly a . dollar at the opening with trading heavy. ' .' " They abdicated their leadership to oils around mid-way of the se - cion and fell back to close un changed to slightly higher. They have been " favorites for v three days now and were initially responsible for starting the jrally that eventaully started the market upward this week.. -. . v Chemicals and aircrafts . had hrief flurries of activity but they never developed much leadership or price strength. -- Rails and utilities were neglect ed and in both sections the losses ran from a few cents to around a dollar a share. - ; The .volume of business held up rather 'well for a pre-holiday ses-r cion, coming to 1,290,000 shares as against 1,300,000 shares yester day. ...... Both the stock exchange and the curb market will be closed tomor row for Good Friday. They will resume business as usual with the two-hour session Saturday. Short Covering Rallies Grain Future Prices CHICAGO, March 22-CffV-Short covering rallied . grain and soy beans future prices today in late trading. . ; Favorable Korean war news caused some selling of wheat ear ly, but the short covering later was due partly to continued dry weather in the winter wheat belt of the southwest and extreme western Nebraska. Wheat closed - to 1 cent higher than the. previous - finish, corn up iolhi. oats 7 higher to" lh lower rye l1 to 2 cents up, soybeans unchanged to .34 cents higher, and lard 10 cents a hundred pounds higher to 40 cents lower.. , .;' Today was the last day of trad ing in-March contracts. Open in terest in these: deliveries was not larse and Drice fluctuations were not so wide as sometimes occurs on the final trading day.
