Mexico fINSI The discovery of an old Spanish coin-has stirred sleepy little Ensanada into another frenzy of hunting for hidden pirate treasure. This has been a periodic occurrence since the days when Captain Kidd and gentlemen of similar I ilk .used the natural Ensenada harbor for a base of operations. I I- i The coin was found by a Mexican peon somewhere near the coast line a few miles from the town. Mexico ; i ; 1 ;: but after whispering about his find to a few of his amigos he disap peared . Whatever the peon's reason for dropping from sight, he cannot be found by the gold-seekers. That doesn't stop them, however. They're once more hunting along the coastline and in the hills hop ing to find the end of the pirate cr. .ed rainbow. Lie pirates are supposed to have buried much of their pilfered treasure in" the vicinity of Ense nada, whose perfect harbor is the only one along that stretch of Mexican coast. The old-timers keep forever searching, although there are no clues available as to the locations sot treasure hoards. However, it was through eager searching parties that wealth did come to Ensenada. They actually discovered raw gold at El Alamo, 74 miles from the town, where now is located Mexico's largest gold mines. - Despite the undesirability of the pirates citizens, they were re ' sponsible in the settlement of the area, establishing ranches and erecting buildings when the pirate business fell off, as it were. Their knowledge of shipping and the sea made trading , one of the more irofitable ventures and before ong Ensenada became one of the leading export cities in the region. Time went on and as wealth began to flow in, other industries -were established. Mexico's largest fish cannery is operating in Ense nada. Wheat fanning caused flour mill to be built and sheep raising resulted in a woolen milL Off the shores of Baja Califor nia' lie some of the most fertile fishing grounds of the Pacific ocean, attracting thousands - of American sportsmen - who come down, to catch swordfish, tuna, yellowtail, bass, albacore and -. many other game fish. The visitor, should he get aboard Vhorse .and ride inland a few tnries, would see fields of red in spectacular . display. The red is from chilis -Ensenada's third larg est industry-' Some 2000 tons a year of the spicy peppers are sent annually to Chicago, where they are used to cure and flavor meat. Back in this chili country, the visitor .will see hundreds of caves Into the sides of the hills. Here is where the peons who work the fields live. ' Probably one of the most color ful, of Ensenada's businesses is that of gathering kelp. The town's Compania Mexicans de Agar pro duces iodine and agar which is exDorted all over thei North American continent. Mexican div ers go out in barges arid dive to great depths, cutting the kelp loose from its bed. I H I During 1890 Ensenada: was the home of Robert Louis Stevenson. The Island de Santos Todos, just offshore at the mouth of the har bor, is believed to have 'been the inspiration for his most famous ork, "Treasure Island."; The small island, 1 a mile wide and a mile and a half long;, is full of caves and Stevenson used to spend days roaming the ' island. Perhaps there are! still j pirate hoards on the isle. The Mexicans, believing that to be' true, have nicknamed the bit of land jTreas ure Island. I '. it j - I Stevenson bought! one j of the early ranches in the area.) It had one of the first windmills in Baja California and, located on the main road , as it was, K attracted many travelers who would jstop for water. It was from these that Stevenson apparently drew many of the characters for his stories. I Probably the most important de velopment in Ensenada ; in( recent ygars .was the reopeningf of the famous Playa Ensenada, built 18 years ago by Jack Dempsey and a group of Americans I as a 'palatial gambling establishment. It was closed to the public ; 12 years ago when the Mexican government re scinded its gambling license. : Since "then the huge edifice at times has been idle and during the war was used as a headquarters for Mexican armed forces. A couple of years ago, however, for mer MGM movie star : Marjorie Plant, widow of the late tin king, Phil Plant, spent a quarter of ; a million dollars in reopening the es tablishment U Now it is one of the most awe inspiring structures along that part of the Pacific coast.: It stands di rectly in the middle of !a pure white sand beach seven miles long which forms the cove that trans lated means "Ensenada." I Plans now-are in preparation for the building of the coast's first golf course directly in back of the hotel, a large heated swimming pool, additional cottages on the beach and other facilities, j An annual event j is the Ense nada Yacht Race from Newport Balboa, Cal., to Ensenada. Hun dreds of boats compete in the race with film notables such, as Hum phrey Bogart, Frank Morgan, Errol Flynn and other sportsmen en tered.
