Cattle Testing
Dispute Arises
A complaint that several; cattle
owners in the Silverton district
are not cooperating with the coun
ty's herd-testing program was
turned over to the district attor
ney's office Wednesday by Mar
ion county court.
Dr. E. L. Henkel, county vet
erinarian in the Silverton district,
complained to the county court
that several cattlemen "have re
fused to cooperate with the county
herd inspector in testing their cat
tle." 5
Henkel said that one owner re
fused to allow his cattle : tested
and another did not have his cattle
ready on testing day, "even though
owners were notified in advance."
Under the present county program
cattle are tested periodically for
disease. ;

Marlon County Judge Rex
Hartley explained that the state
highway commission had not defi
nitely committed itself on widen
ing the road. Recently, however,
the commission indicated lt might
take action on the road early next
year." J
The Independence delegation
revealed a long-range specula
tive plan which calls for comple
tion of the road into a state high
way from Salem, across the new
Willamette river bridge through
Independence, to Valsetx and on
to the coast. ,
Polk county delegates also
showed interest in a plan calling
for the present Santiam highway
to be extended through Stayton,
Jefferson to the new bridge at
Independence. ' ;
