Japanese popiflation Rapidly
Increases D
By Bruce
TOKYO-(INS) -In Japan, one child is born every fen seconds.
One person dies every 17 seconds. Tuberculosis is on the decline; men
outnumber women in Tofcyo; divorces are on the upswing, and when
all the figures are in for the 1950 Japanese census, officials predict
aii increase in population. " j.
' While war, famine. and other disasters have taken a heavy toll of
the population of the Asiatic main-1
land since 1945, the Japare pop
ulation has shown a spectacular
increase.
Count Difficult
' In ct, the population increase
has been get'"" so rapid, and
families so large, that taking an
accurate head count was exceed
ihgly di cult.-
For example, take the case of
the Waka'-ayashi family, living in
Fuyjimiya city near the base of
Mt. Fuji.
Hea Chohie Wakabayshi,
100, fi generations of this family
are alive and active. Sotara, his
son, is 74; Kenzo, the grandson, 53;
MasanoLu, the great-grandson, 26;
and Takasumi, the great-great
grand- is one year eld
Wa'tabayashi, the family name,

This new ensus, started last
October called the most thor
ough of the ten that have been
taken sn-- 10 will attempt to
ascertain just how many people
Ctu. Mj live in Japan.
It took 300.000 census takers,
working in all parts of Japan,
three days to complete their visits.
Each census taker called on about
50 families.
Big Job Seen
Some idea of the tremendous de
tail and care involved in this 1950
head count is seen in the fact that
bef i j n the job, -ach cen
sus taker was given a 70-page
single spaced, typewritten, legal
si?d docum t to study on how
to go about making the tabula
tions. So voluminous are the mere tab
ulation - population figures
alone that Japanese Welfare Min
istry officials report compilations
will not be completed until April,
1951.
Related details on types of em
ployme and oth.. family matters
will not be fully classified until
the end r 1953.
When the war ended in 1945,
population on the four major is
lands Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyu

proximately 72,500,000. These peo

ductive. I
By 1949, est;mates had the popu
lation at ore than 82,000,000. By
com,- orison, the entire .population
of stralia, counting post-war
ir ' :, is about 9,OO0,D00.f
A. elf are Ministry officials re
vealed the heaviest rxst-war pop
ulation incre. . along the; Pacific
ocean side of the main island of
Honshu. Individuals cluster about
such great industrial cities as Tok
yo, Yokohama, Kobe $nd Osaka.
A at '? the guess the popu
lation after this census is tabulat
ed? Officials estimate ihat a popu
lation in excess of 84,000,000 is not
unthinkable. And at jhe prccent
rate of increase, the year 1962
may see the Tapaneser population
at 100,' 70,000. I
TB Death Dawn ?
Tokyo, the nation's largest city,

men than women in Japan as
whole. : i
Among thw peacetime civilian
pop .tion. tuberculosis is the sin
gle r;:3t disease resulting in
death. During 1 19 If 8,000 peo
ple Jied from T" But this was
the lowest death rate since 1899,
and 6,000 deaths less t'.an the pre-
ceding year.
Along with the population in
crease, divorces have Jalso shown
a steady trend upward. Without
the aid of Reno, in i 1949 there
were 83,000 divorces as compared
with 79,0' the p- vious year.
