Although not a big club the Panthers are made up primarily of sophomores who are excep tionally fast and deceptive. 1 Dr. Carlson , is in his 29th sea son as Pitt coach. His all-time record at Pitt before this season reads 339 wins and 214 losses. The Panthers also play such teams as Iowa, Carnegie Tech, Bradley, Navy, Bucknell, Penn State, Army -and west Virginia. Coach Slats Gill had his charges back at practice work today fol lowing the loss to Portland, the first time in history an Oregon State basketball team has lost to the Pilots. Whistled down 34 times to 13 for the Pilots Tuesday night. the Beavers were licked . on the free-throw strip. When time comes for the moving the di rectors may call upon volunteer stockholders to lend helping hands. Maybe He Can Ask Himself for Some 1951 TD'm Most of the collegiate athletes are now occupied with various and sundry Jobs daring the holiday season. Best we've heard of belongs to Gene Taft, the Oregon State football halfback. He's no less than Santa Clans himself In a downtown department store la Corvallis . . . Tony Freitas, the ancient southpaw pitcher wont be with the Vancouver Caps next season after alL Caps Boss Bob Brown drafted Freitas from the Modesto, CaL, club during the Florida meetings, but now has decided not to exercise his option and will leave Freitas to manage the Modesto team next year. Bat there is a wee catch to it. For his generosity, Brown is to re ceive three pitchers from the major league club working with Modesto! Again proving that Brown doesn't sport the handle "Old Fox" merely because of his 70-odd years ... Contrary to the red hot reports that Bill Schuster is to be the next Vancouver manager, Brown at present assures that the berth still is wide open. He's afraid the fiery Schuster behavior might not fit well at Vancouver. The Vancouver parent club at Seattle wants Brown to take on Eddie Taylor as mgr., Taylor having been released as a coach of the Rainiers recently. But Brown doesnt seem to want him either. Bill Brenner, in town to apply for the Senators' Job this week, told that he could have returned to the Caps next season as boss, but felt that five years of it was long enough. Bill's ideas on what he should have for a winning ball club, and those possessed by Brown didn't match. So rather than knock noggings with "Ruby Robert again next semester, Brenner decided to resign ... If They Don't Ulfe 'Em, They Shoo 'Em Off Catcher Birdie Tebbetfs sale to the Detroit Tigers came as no surprise to many, as Steve O'Neill, new skipper of the Red Sox peddled Tebbetts off the Detroit club when O'Neill managed there. Seems that O'Neill and Birdie aren't in the baddy-baddy Index. Another similar example involves Sweeney of the Bevos and Harr Storey, the sock -'em infielder. Sweeney got rid of Storey when both were attached to the Los Angeles club, and then when the mgr. came to Portland and found Storey already there, he prompt ly peddled him off to San Diego. Only trouble with such deals is that the gay yon get rid of oft bounces back with the enemy to beat your brains oat. We've had some dandy examples right here at Waters field the past few seasons, but won't go into detail, again ... Meanwhile the ToO-odd stock certificates for those who have purchased Senator stock are now available at the First National Bank here. The certificates are to be mailed to those living outside of Salem. But those who reside within the city must call at the bank In person for the certificates. Three men have so far offici ally applied for the Senators gen eral and player managerships. namely Jack Wilson, Bill Brenner and Hugh Loby. The latter is to come to Salem from his Oakland, Cal., home next week to meet with the board of directors. Bren ner met with the board Tuesday and Wilson was in town last week. The board has made no official announcement concerning who will wind up with the general managership, but it is believed that Luby will hold the inside track If proper financial arrange ments can be made with him.
