By Paul W Harvey. Jr. It was a sad day for the roosters when the Oregon Agricultural experiment station found out that fewer of them would be better for the hens. The station discovered this year that using fewer roosters per flock produces more fertile eggs. Only five or six roosters are needed per 100 hens. When there are too many roos ters, fertility is decreased, proba bly because of too much fighting among the roosters. If poultry breeders follow the advice, the number of roosters in Oregon would be cut in half. The station, however, hasn't been able to get very far in study ing the 50 or so virus diseases of trees and plants. In fact, they have gotten just as far as medical men have in solving the problem of human virus diseases, like , the common cold. But progress is being made to ward finding the insects which carry the virus diseases from tree to' tree, and from orchard to or chard. The researchers indentified one species of leaf hopper which carries a virus disease of cherry trees- The idea is that these virus di seases might be stopped by killing the insects which spread them. New Grape Industry Anew Concord grape industry for eastern Oregon might come from the discovery that they can be grown there-profitably. Tests are being made to fiud out what kind of berries can best be frozen or canned. And a lot of time is being spent trying to pro mote the idea of freezing fruit or berry pies. They can be frozen, unbaked or baked, and that might develop into a big business for m s v n W n r4 UUICUUUJa Use of sawdust as a mulch for horticultural crops was tested this year, and the station found it im proved crop yields. But it warned that a lot of nitrogen must be used with the sawdust. Wood molasses was found to be a good food for sheep, hogs and poultry. It comes from wood waste, and will save livestock owners a lot of money. Much Research The station is doing much re- . aearch in canning methods. It wants to make canned foods taste like fresh foods. , -New oyster beds, including re building the once-famous Yaquina bay beds, might result from the discovery of a method of "raising oyster larvae in the laboratory. Raising the oyster larvae this way and then planting them would remove most of the hazards of the oyster industry. A new outlet for Oregon-grown flax might come from the station's developing of weaving flax yarns Into draperies, linens and uphols tering materials. Good Reception The station said samples of flax fabrics got a good reception be fore fabric designers and manu facturers in New York City this gas can be produced commercially from waste of fruit processing plants. This discovery also will relieve stream pollution, because the waste products dump ed into rivers wouldn't produce the gas which pollutes them. Control of many kinds of vege table pests was achieved the past year. And even chrysanthemum lov ers benefitted from the station. In the middle of the Christmas rush hours an attractive, fashion-able-dressed woman stepoed up to a cashier's window in the Pasa dena First Trust and Savings bank, laid down four $10 bills and asked for a fifty. The cashier put up the fifty and called attention to the fact the lady was $10 short. Thereupon she dug into her purse found another $10 and said she "might as well" get a $100 bill while she was at it. The cashier obligingly passed the $100 bill across the counter and raked in the woman's five $10 bills and the bank's fifty.
