Twin Automatic X-Ray Machine Shows Heart CHICAGO, Dec 13 -(P)- A new iwin automatic ,x.-ray machine . that shows the inside of the heart ; and blood vessels at work was de scribed Tuesday to the Radiolog ical Society of North AmoHra Dr. Wendell G. Scott, associate professor of clinical radiology at the Washington university school of medicine, "St Louis, said the tecnruque holds considerable promise. :,. He said it aids in the. accurate . diagnosis of the conditions that cause "blue babies" and assists the surgeon in determining whe ther corrective surgery can be unaenaKen. s 3e saio li aiso may lead to a er understanding of different tvpes of heart disease caused by rneumatic fever, high blood pres sure, hardening of the arteries and artery changes. Injected Into Blood An opaque substance that shows ud on an X-rav nlate is inlecteH Into the blood : stream. Then the automatic X-ray machine takes a fast series of pictures of the heart and ; blood vessels from two di rections simultaneously. - s , This, in effect, permits a doctor xo "see", inside the heart and ves sel as thev nerform their work. The twin picture eliminates the need for a second injection of the opaque substance and the dis comfort of related examinations. It permits the doctor to study the nean m three dimensions height, Dreadtn and depth. Good Results Two doctors renorted ponrt re. suits -with a protective grid that permits radiologists to treat rieen seated cancers with massive X-ray doses never before administered to humans. The grid, a Drotective nad of lead' and rubber in which little holes are drilled, was adapted by ur. MirscrrftiarKs of the New York Cty cancer institute. The sieve- like Dad is nlaeed nn the cVir over the tumor when X-rays are polled. X-ray treatment of cancers int aeep organs has been limited by 8 ine vujneraDimy or the healthy J5 skin 3nd surface tissues. The high g neeaea can cause sucn se vere skin burns that treatment must be halted prematurely The perforated pad limits the burn to tiny spots m a treated area. jjj If : r-, Regular 49c CHRISTMAS TREE 2 for 53c lower level Just the thing for cakes for that holiday party. Emergency Edict Doesn't Mean M-Day I WASHINGTON, Dec. 13 -(JP) Military reservists I all over the country are asking "Whs pens to us if President T r urn a n declares a national emergency?" Defense department officials, sneo xo ciartry the situation, ex pressed the following views: ' 1. The October "slow-down" policy in calling reserves to ac tive duty, though technically itill in effect, is not being carried 'out as originally planned, because of the pressure of events in Korea. 2. If a national emergency is declared, this might be the occa sion for throwing the "slow down" policy out the window en tirely. . - 3. But a declaration of nation al emergency would not, in it self, require 'reservists to report for active duty. It would not auto matically mean the mobilization of reservists. The army, navy and air - force Would continue to use their regular procedures, each ser vice calling up men according to its needs. That statement should relieve the minds of some reservists who had the impression that a nation al emergency declaration would automatically put them on active duty within 24 hours. The procedure for the three ma jor branches of the armed : ser vices also would apply to the coast guard concerning a call-up of men. ine coast guard normally j operates under the treasury de partment but could be placed by presidential order under the di rection of the navy, as it was in World War II.
