14 The- Stateeman Salem, On. Thursday. Horwnbw IB-, nrgo United States To Need More Veterinarians NEW YORK, Nov. 15-(INS-The United States is confronted with a growing need for veterinary care and medicine. - t 1 This need is indicated by the fact that this country suffers ani mal losses, due to various ail ments, totaling around a billion dollars a year. Peter B. B. Andrews, former U. S. economic adviser, writing in a recent issue of the Merck Report, said that the demand for veterin ary products is likely to reach a new record. livestock Larrest He estimated that the veterin ary medicine industry will pro duce a total of aproximately 2, 700,000 cubic centimeters, or Oth er comparable units, of biological materials for use in the treatment or testing of livestock diseases. Andrews said that the U. S. Bureau of Animal Industry also will produce tuberculin for the testing of some 9,000,000 cattle, and anitgen for making about 6, 000,000 blood tests for brucellosis of cattle. - The livestock industry is agri culture's largest. Half the total farm income comes from live stock. And this industry suffers heavy losses. ' Some losses are due to the fact ' that veterinary assistance is not available in many remote places. Andrews says that it will be many years before this situation is en tirely remedied.' ' Colleges Offer Courses The present number of about 15,000 veterinarians is located mostly in larger cities and con centrates on pet practice. Never theless, veterinary schools have been carrying capacity enroll ments and are expanding. : The accredited colleges of vet erinary medicine, all of which re quire a six-year course, soon will be graduating about 1,000 stu dents a year. There is a growing demand for veterinarians and veterinary me dicine in research and public health work. Andrews concludes that the prevention and control of live stock diseases, and the protection of the public from exposure to them, should keep the veterinary medical profession and its sup . pliers operating at capacity. Smog May Cut Farm Activities PHILADELPHIA -(INS)- Un controllable smog may one day end all farming near industrial cities, according to results of a year of plant research. The adverse effects of smog gasses on growing farm products were determined by tests in a $500,000 weather-factory, or Phy- totron," in southern California. A complicated, highly sensitive con trol system in the Phytotron, de veloped by engineers of the Brown Instruments Division of the Minneapolis-Honeywell Regulator Co., makes it possible to control and duplicate weather conditions found anywhere in the world. , Research in the greenhouses and laboratories, conducted by Calif ornia Institute of Technology sci entists under controlled smog con ditions, indicated that some of the gasses in smog were toxic to plants and visibly damaged them. Al though the research did not uncov er reasons for this action, the re sults were positive enough to make the growing of vegetables in smog bound areas "economically impossible." Child Frolics With Bullet Near Brain PITTSBURGH -(INS)-A three-year-old girl is. amazing physicians at Children's hospital in Pittsburgh by riding her tricycle all around th hospital with a bullet lodged bear her brain. The child, Titian-haired Evelyn BelL- was acidentally shot while playing in her home in New Brigh ton, Pa, last July 27. ' A nurse said: "It's really amazing to see her wheel around when you think what happened to her." Doctors have not yet removed the 22 caliber revolver bullet be cause of Evelyn's condition. They have decided to "wait and see what happens before attempting the delicate operation. . - The bullet was fired from a gun which Evelyn and some playmates found in a trunk in the Bell home.
