OctoBor 21, 1950 Mill Stream Ducking Out At Willamette - ThereH be .no more ducking of Willamette students down by the mid Mill stream behind the campus. it appeared Friday. Declaring the stream "grossly polluted by sewage, Dr. Ralph Purvine, univeriity health service director, recommended it be placed off-kmits for college pranksters. G. Herbert Smith, Willamette president, promptly announced that any student who threw an other in Mill creek would be ex pelled from the university. A toss into the stream has for years- been the fate of male mem bers of the losing class in. Fresh man Glee, annual campus music event. The action followed a water analysis which revealed that Mill creek was contaminated with wa ter which, if ingested, could re sult in typhoid fever and other serious diseases. Last of Voter Pamphlets in Mail Friday Last of the 750,000 combined voters and measures pamphlets for the November 7 election were placed in the mails this week by the state elections bureau. The law provides these pam phlets shall be mailed at least 15 days prior to the general election, Cost of printing and mailing the pamphlets was. estimated at $80,- 1000. ' All of the pamphlets, except those covering Multnomah and Marion counties, were printed In the state printing department here. The Multnomah pamphlets were printed in Portland and the Mar ion county pamphlets in Salem. Officials said in previous years approximately 7 per cent of the pamphlets were returned because the persons to whom they were addressed had . moved without leaving a forwarding address. This year the elections bureau refused to guarantee return post age with the result there will be a substantial financial saving to the state. Millar, pres ident and chairman of. the board, were in Salem today on an inspec tion tour of Oregon Flax Textiles, a major subsidiary. Rape Attempt Reported in Salem Area A reported rape attempt at a home just east of Salem had law officers patrohng an area near Oregon state hospital last night. Authorities said a housewife was manhandled by a rough-looking stranger who knocked her down and tore clothing from her before he fled. The woman opened the door late at night thinking it was her husband returning from work, officers said. State police and deputy sheriffs joined in maintaining a vigil on the area early this morning. Legion Post Roster Tops Count of 500 A novel membership drive has pushed Salem's American Legion post 136 over the 500 mark for the first time in its history. Members who don't sign up a new member are apt to wind up with a duck swimming around in their bathtub. It started about two weeks ago when members drew lots. The five losers had to adopt a duck until they signed up a new member. Then they could palm the duck off on any other member who hadn't produced a new member.
