Angel, this morning received the solemn blessing of the new Benedictine abbot by the .Most Kev. ArgnDisnop iuiwara jj. Howard oi Portland in a three-hour ceremony at St. Mary's church here. Abbot Damian, resplendent in his new vestments and miter, the abbatial ring on ; his finger ana carrying the gilded staff which is the symbol of his authority, left the church with his retinue of sev eral hundred prelates, priests, monks and seminarians ' Abbot Damian, who for the past five years was pastor of St Mary's Catholic church in ML' Angel, was elected August 16 to serve as coad jutor abbot to Rt Rev. Abbot Thomas Meier, OSB, who asked for a coadjutor in official duties as nead oi we aoDey Decause or tail ing eyesight By papal sanction, the new abbot assumed full authority at once but had to wait until a later date for his solemn blessing and the bestowal of the miter, ring and staff. I Responsibilities lifted " Since abbots are elected for life, Abbot Thomas will, continue to be known as Abbot Thomas and will be accorded all the honors of his position, but . will not be weighted with the responsibility of ruling the affairs o the abbey. ? It was an impressive gathering of church dignitaries that -took part in the colorful ceremony of the blessing. Besides the officiat ing Archbishop Howard, there were the Most Rev. Bishops, Ed ward J. Kelly of Boise, and Fran cis P. Leipzig of Baker City, the Rt Rev. Abbots Raphael Heider, OSB, St Martin's abbey,. Wash., Thomas Meier, OSB of Mt Angel; Paul N. Nahlen of Subiaco abbey, Ork.; Columban Thuis, OSB, La.; Stephen Schappler of Conception abbey. Mo.; Gerald Benkert of Marmion abbey, ILL, and Ignatius Esser of St Meinrad abbey, Ind., and about 100 priests from all parts of the northwest, besides the members of the local abbey. Lay people, visitors and the townsfolk took up all the remaining avail able space in the spacious Gothic church. --, y- ' ! . The Most Rev. Leipzig, newly consecrated bishop of Baker City and an alumnus of Mt Angel col lege, in giving the occasional ser mon, spoke of the rule of St. Ben edict, which has left its blessings on all countries where the Bene dictines have established their monasteries and schools to educate and train youth in mind, heart and trades from the time of the great Benedict in the year 529 j to Abbot Damian of today. Damian Broxmeyer, OSB, Mt An gel; assistants to Abbot Damian, Very Rev. Martin Pollard, OSB, Mt Angel and Rev. Paul Benedict OSB, Portland; assistants to Abbot Thomas, the Rev, Vincent Kop pert, OSB,' Tillamook, and the Rev. Anthony Terhaar, Mt Angel; as sistants to Abbot Raphael, the Rev. Urban Keber, OSB, Portland, and the Rev. Clement Frank, OSB; masters of ceremony, the Rev. Thomas Brockhaus, OSB, and the Rev. Richard Galvin, OSC," Mt AngeL St Mary's choir sang the ordi nary of the mass and the abbey choir chanted the proper of the mass and the psalms and litany. Adding to the dignity and color ful lmpressiveness of the ceremon ies was the presence of the eight fourth degree Knights of Colum bus in full regalia who acted as guards of honor and stood with stood with crossed swords while the assemblage of prelates and clergy filed into the sanctuary, and stood with raised swords dur ing the consecration. Another dramatic moment was when, near the close of the serv ice, Abbot Damian, after receiving his miter, ring, staff and gloves, left the altar and walked down the center aisle of the church blessing the people on either side. Reception Honors New Teachers at Turner School . SUtesmaa News Service TURNER A reception honoring teachers was given Thursday eve ning at the school house. New teachers this year are Faith Rice, first grade, and Janet Bradley, second grade. Other teachers are Mrs. George Breckenridge, Har riet Cain, Mrs. Paul Thomas, Nor ma Goddard and Richard Gwillim, principal. A program of musical numbers and introductions was followed by visiting and getting acquainted. -The reception was sponsored by the PTA. The hot lunch program got un der way at the grade school here Monday. This is the first time lunches have been served for many years. The former domestic science room has been divided into a kit chen and serving room and a large storage room. New stoves, dish washer, and various tables have been installed. The room has been oainted. and new linoleum put on the floor. Mrs. Marie Harman and Mrs. Orrin Schollian are doing the cooking. Girl Scout Meeting Scheduled Friday At Willaniina Gym Statesman Newi Service WILLAMINA The Girl Scouts will hold their first fall meeting Friday evening at the grade school gym at 7:30 All Girl Scouts are urged to attend. Ted Zetterberg was honored this week on his 18th birthday at a dinner given by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Zetterberg. Mr. and Mrs. Russell Davis and Cheryl, Bob Billson and Dale Niccolson were other guests. Mrs. Roy McNamar was given a going-away lunch this week by Mrs. Jimmy Monaco.
