Demonstration Time Is Set s Sheep tick control will be shown at a deminstration at the Marcus Vetter farm at 1:30 pjn. on Tues day. Sept 26. announces Don Coin Walrod, Clackamas county exten- aion agent. Sheep ticks feed upon the blood of their host, causing irritation and reducing the vitality of the ani mal. Considerable wool may be lost by rubbing. Lambs are most noticeably affected, and when they are heavily infested they are re tarded in growth and do not gain normally. Sheep raisers can in crease profits from their flock by controlling sheep ticks, says Wal rod, and control is easy gnd cheap, Fall Treatment Best Sheep can be treated for ticks at any time when weather con ditions are not severe. However, sheep that are treated during the early fall 'Will be relatively free of ticks all winter, and there will be very few ticks to move onto the lambs in the spring. Spraying, dipping, and dusting . are the three methods of control available, the choice of which de- pends upon the number of animals to be treated and the facilities available to the flock owner. Spraying with 400 pounds pressure Is a simple and effective method Dipping vats are very effective in controlling ticks. For those who have just a few animals dusting by band is satisfactory. Methods Described - DDT or rotenone are the insec ticides most commonly used. They are effective, safe, -and readily available, and they will give ex cellent controL For spraying eight pounds of 50 per cent wettable DDT, to 100 gallons of water is recommended by Walrod. In pre paring a dip 4 to 8 pounds of 50 per cent wettable DDT powder is used to 100 gallons of water, or 8 ounces. of 5 per cent rotenone to 100 gallons of water A 10 per cent DDT dust is used for hand dusting. Cost of treatment is estimated to be 2 or 3 cents per head. All sheep raisers are invited to attend this demonstration at the Vetter farm. Vetter lives one mile south of the intersection of the UytWW"" Go to Help China The Hanson Leghorn farm, Cor- vallis, is doing its bit toward help ing the Chinese continue to nave their egg foo-yung. -This past week end 150 pullets and 30 eock rels left via the Pan-American World Airways for ; Hong Kong, China. Jess Hanson, owner, with his son. Dick, or tne wona-iamous Leghorn breeding farms, explains that the blooded birds were snip ped at an air-freight cost of $1,160 to T. K. Hwang of Hong Kong. This Chinese poultryman bought some breeding stock from Hanson when- he lived at Am boy, China. This was destroyed by the Chinese Reds last fall, and Hwang, is at tempting to make a come-back in his new location. , Hanson has been shipping size able amounts of eggs and poultry by air to various sections of the Orient for some time. During this past spring he has sent more than 13,000 hatching eggs by air to Japan. Onion Growers Will Hold Hearings, Salem Onion growers and property owners in the Lake Labish district are advised of a public hearing to be held in the circuit court room on the third floor of the Marion county courthouse on Thursday, Sept. 28, at 8 pjn. Remonstrances will be heard concerning the amendment of the control order (onion yellow dwarf control) now in effect in the Lake Labish district, according to' Frank McKennon, chief of the division of plant industry, Oregon department of agriculture. "Discussion will probably center around the in elusion of an anti-dumping clause in Control Area No; 9," states County Extension Agent D. L, Rasmussen. Strand told college staff members at the first faculty meet ing of the year that he is more than ever convinced of the vital role played by the land grant col leges in the development of this nation. Aside from the common schools. the land grant colleges have been the most important factor in the development of democracy and economic well being in this coun try, President Strand told the hun dreds of teachers, research and ex tension workers who carry on the program of Oregon s land grant college. Political independence, given the Philippines in 1946 when the Is lands had just begun to recover from the war, is not the complete answer some expected, the presi dent pointed out. To this must be added economic independence which can only come from efficient development of natural resources. especially agriculture, he said. While President Strand, one of a five-man mission appointed by President Truman, could not re- ! veal the recommendation just turned in to the state department. he did say that research and edu cation is far more important than mere mechanization of agriculture in the Philippines. "Ten county agents would do more good than a million tractors under present conditions, he pointed out.
