The Edo Vanni deal proved this. In stead he went for the culls re leased by other WIL. clubs after they strengthened up, and for the hirelings who couldn't stick in a Class D circuit. True enough' Emigh purchased Pete Tedeschi from Denver and paid a fairly fancy price for him, plus transportation from Denver. But what Emigh didn't know at Se ume everyone use in uie ague knew of it but decided to . let George run his own shoy Was that Tedeschi had fully made ' tip bis mind to quit the pro jame and was merelylooking for a free ride home to San Francisco. He Emigh's generosity. Iiska hollered long and loudly for a third baseman when he had to pull Mel Wasley in from the out field in mid-season. He finally got him a couple of weeks before the season was over. The third-baser was Lee Sbinn, who bad played zor the senators ill years ago. ; The Hurley Bell incident was another great move. If youll re call the publicity at the time, Hurley was the big negro all- vouihi hum riiniifcn uunnuixu had secured from one of the major Carkie leagues around Chicago. lTm Jm m in the league with his hitting, and can pitch good too," were Emigh's words. 'Bell failed to show for two or three weeks and a worried Emigh pent money trying to find out What had. happened to him. He finally showed up the night the galems played Portland here, and If you missed seeing him you really missed one of the season's highlights. ' He might have been ble to tear down a fence with a line drive 20 years ago, but his best shot now would be to take an axe ' to it. Old Hurley was a massive laugh for the audience that night But he was a far cry from being ' helpful player. Actually Hurley Bell can be found hanging around most any horse racing track.. We've seen him for -years at Portland Mead- ews and at Gresham. And we've een him just as often as-Lone Oak track at the fairgrounds, where he spent anbf last week playing thef?1 J-' reserves- He.de; pomes. I . Little wonder Llska finally gave up. Ad's managing left something to be desired at times well admit But at least he tried and begged all season long for the type of ballplayers he knew he wanted. It wasn't his fault he didnt get . them and had to be stuck to suffer With what be was given. . There are other Items also. Most of the players visiting the beer and whiskey pubs every night; players visibly - going through naught but the mere motions on the field and being allowed to continue playing; spoken resent ment over the way they were be ing handled, etc- etc- etc. We could have printed them as they happened, but didnt We could have also written of the many folks who flatly refuse ever to go to the park again so long as the Portlands and Emigh have any thing to do with it But we omitted that also. But no longer do we hold back the punches. Not after the ball dubs they've been putting in here Sear after year and then blaming alem folks rather than them selves. - And not after hearing through Bill Brenner, one of our oldest and best friends that Emigh had told him the reason for Sal - em's poor attendance again this season was '"Iightner's unfavor able publicity." Whether or not the club will be sold to the local interests now supposedly dickering for it ' don't know. -We sincerely hope it will be, as if the club is handled right it can and will make money for its owners. But if it comes to ' pass that It is purchased locally, we just as sincerely - hope that stipulations are made in the con tract that anyone now attached to the Portland organization be charged double to get into the park henceforth. ; We've had about all of that out fit we can stomach. There was a man who perhaps made more of an impression on the clients than anyone Owen has brought forth in 10 years.
