' . , - ' Opposition to existing officials stems from the year-old contro versy over Albany's city managership form of government. Raymond Barrett and Don Densmoor, first ward councilmen, will run against Kelvin DeWitt and Dan Roth. ; After the council job in the sec ond ward are Frank Dooley, the Incumbent, and Raymond Fisher, Millard F. Willis and Tom Dry nan. -Third ward incumbents, C H. Davis and Howard Maloney will be opposed by William Cook nd Basil Ryals. Registration "closed 'Monday, August 28, instead of August 14, the deadline set originally. The date was moved up to give more aspirants a chance to register to decided what have been extremely controversial issues. Proponents contend the city managership creates more effici ency in government procedures and point to recent improvements in Albany to bear out their argu - ments. ,: v - City Firemen Fight 6 Fires At Lebanon Statesman Newi Srrie LEBANON City firemen were called out six times during the first four days this week, with on ly one fire resulting in major loss. Tuesday evening the home of Mr. and -Mrs. Wesley Shimanek on East Oak burned during their ab sence. Firemen arrived in time to confine flames to three -rooms., Damage amounted to $3,000. "Monday's two fires were both grass blazes. Another Tuesday fire during the afternoon sent trucks five miles east to control a brush fire until units from the Linn County Forest Fire Patrol arrived. Wednesday trucks did similar duty west of Lebanon when brush and oak trees on Peterson's Butte broke out in flames. The trucks returned to the site of Tuesday's brush fire on Thursday to check ft after embers had been fanned and scattered into new timber by dry winds. . School Starts Sept. 11 at West Stayton Statesman Newt Service WEST STAYTON Monday, Sept. 11, is the opening day of school at West Stayton. James Brant, the principal and teacher of the 7th and 8th grades, is mov ing into his new home. Mrs. Leo na Beck of Salem will replace Mrs. Helen Peters, who has re signed and accepted a position in Nebraska. The school will have a new projector and screen for visual aid study on which the pupils will get their information by mov ies and slides. - .Recent guest at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harold White was Mrs. Harriet Northrop of Ontario, Calif. Mr. and Mrs. Paul McClellan were hosts for a family reunion Thursday for members of Mrs. McClellan's family. The last re union was held in 1939. Present were Mr. and Mrs. Donald Field and son Bruce, Mrs. Donald Lee and son Sidney of Calgary, Cana da, Mrs. Lois' Alter, Mrs. Jacque line Rose and children Catherine and ' Clifford ' of Portland, ' .Mrs. Alma Hatfield of Salem and Gene and Truman McClellan. "SBC""- Niels Pedersen HoldFamily Reunion Picnic SUtesmaa Newi Service BETHEL A family reunion was held Sunday, August 27, at the Niels ' Pedersen home in the Bethel community, with 35 rela tives - from Portland, Roseburg, Bend, Silverton, Amity, Huron, S. Dak, and West Point, Neb, at tending the picnic dinner. This was the first time that Mrs. Pedersen, her sisters and brothers, Mrs: Lois Maack, West Point, Neb, Mrs. E. S. Thompson, Huron, S. Dak, E. A. Schroeder, Amity, and Rex. A. Schroeder of Bend, have been together in 37 years. Local Folks Are Returning froni Church Conference - - Statesman Newt Service . CENTRAL HOWELL Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Nofziger left by train Saturday to join Mrs. Nofzlger's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Roth; at Freeman, South Dakota, where they are attending a church conference.-They will visit in Kan sas before returning to. their homes. Mrr and Mrs. Ralph Herr and sons, Clifford and Loren, also at tended the conference and will tour the eastern states before turning home. - Mr. and Mrs. Amos Dubach and daughter Christine from Indiana Woodburn Jaycees to Handle Kiddies Parade Statesman Newi Service WOODBURN ' Responsibility for the "kiddies' parade, a popu lar feature of the annual North Marion county fair here, has been turned over to the Woodburn Jun ior Chamber of Commerce' by the fair board. Efforts are being made to materially enlarge the event for the 1950 fair which will be held September 21, 22 and 23. Premium books for this year's fair have been completed and are being mailed to prospective ex hibitors. A new division for the vent this year will be rabbits. are guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alpheus Schar. Others to arrive from Illinois are Miss Lena Hoerr and Chris Hoerr who art annual visitors at the Schar home. Shortage of cars for shipping is causing a storage problem for ma ny local tirms. With warehouses fuIL grain is dumped in machine sheds and every place that can be used for that purpose. SMITHS SELL HOME , SILVERTON Mr. and Mrs. Gilford - Smith have sold their home here and have brought pro perty in South Salem. (Statesman valley photo.) iwim-Show Set Sunday At Woodburn Statesman Newt Service WOODBURN, Aug. 30 A spe cial swimming show is scheduled for next Sunday, September 3, as the closing event of the 1830 sea son at the-Woodburn war memor ial pool in Settlemeier park here. Starting at .2 p. rn., the hour-long event will feature races, novelty competitions and water pattern demonstrations, according to John Wells, lifeguard and Instructor. Events planned will include a water polo game, watermelon fight, "penny scramble," and a number of swimming races for youngsters of high school age and younger. The water pattern de monstrations will be by a group of girls under the direction of Mrs. Dorothy McMillan. Ths public is invited to attend. The swimming pool will be op en Monday, September 4, from 10 a. m. until 9:30 p. m. but will be closed for the season thereafter. Valley Obituaries East Salem Schools Ready For 1950 Autumn Opening EAST SALEM The teaching faculty at Washington school will have four new teachers for the school. ' Gladys Tipton will be principal and this year she will have only Washington and not three schools as last year. Mrs. Genevieve Curry and Mrs. Lucille Wardlewill have first grades: Mrs. Louise Brooks and Hendra Klabo the second grades; Mrs. " Hortense Hegstad and Mrs. Franc Edwards, the third grades; the fourth, Mrs. Anna M. Mar tin, Eva Wolf the fifth, Mrs. Fran ces Hall a divided fifth and sixth, and Wallace Rlcker a sixth. Mrs. Edwards is a transfer from Salem Heights school. Mrs. Anna Martin comes into the system from the "Polk county schools. Mrs. Hall taught at Frineville, but received her bachelor of arts de gree from Monmouth. Ricker has had no previous ex perience only in practice teach ing, but has attended Oregon State college and received his bachelor of arts degree from Monmouth. The cooks for the cafeteria will be Mrs. Lillian Oliver and Mrs. Herman Rehm. All pupils will register at the school the morning of Friday, September 8, between 9 and 10 ajn. STAYTON Funeral services for Charles Wallace, 69, who died Saturday at his home here, will be held at the Weddle Chapel in Stay ton Saturday at 2:30 p.m the Rev, Richey officiating. Interment will be in Belcrest Memorial park in Salem. r Wallace was born Feb. 4, 1881, In Eugene, and had lived In Stay ton for several years. MIDDLE GROVE All teach ers at Middle Grove school will be new in the system this year. . Wallace Turnidge will be prin cipal and teach fifth and sixth grades. Mrs. Maurice Fleisch mann will have third and fourth grade and Jean Hansen the first and second. Turnidge has had no teaching experience only in substitute teaching. He received his bachelor of arts degree from the Southern College of Education at Ashland. Mrs. Fleischmann was a teacher in Portland and has taught' in the Marion county schools. Miss Hansen was school super visor of a petroleum school at Marcaib, Venezuela, South America. Her home is at Clarion, Iowa. Emory Goode will be cus todian. Mrs. Herbert Zobel will again be in charge of the cafe teria. Pupils will all register at the school Friday, September 8, from 9 to 10 ajn. . AUBURN The teaching facul ty at Auburn school will be the same as last year. Jim Wilson and family have moved to Portland, where he has accepted a position teaching in a Portland school. Schools will open Sept. 25, with high school registration the 21st. Opening Dates Changed at j. Amity Schools Statesmaa Newt Service AMITY- The opening dates for school have been changed to Sept 19 due to the Yamhill Coun ty teacher's institute which is scheduled for Sept. 18. First graders who have not had pre school health examinations may go to the county health of fice for their tests on Saturdays and Wednesdays until the start of school. All teachers will be in at tendance at the school on Sept. 13, 14 and 15 during the hours of 10 to 12 p. m. and 2 to 3 p. m. for registration. . Mr. and Mrs. Richard D.
