Uecker Expresses Optimism ' Over German Church Future A study of church .life in Berlin brought "a feeling of hoDe ad optimism" to the Rev. Lloyd Uecker, pastor of Salem's Englewoqd Evangelical United Brethren church, he reported this week in a let ter to The Statesman. Now in Switzerland on his summer of study and touring in Eu rope, uecxer spent mree-aays. in Berlin. His report included: Attendances in the various places of worship far surpasses that of prewar days and the peo ple seem to have an unprecedent ed desire for Christianity. The ma jority, of the church buildings were completely destroyed during the -war, of which only a few have been rebuilt; however worship ping among bombed out ruins or in a reconstructed cellar does not essen the zeal of Christians to serve God. - "My sleeping quarters were at the home of Wilhelm Meinhardt, pastor of the large ' Evangelical Unitel Brethren church in down town Berlin. The Rev. Mr. Mein hardt was forced into the German army in 1942 and was taken pri soner in Russia in 1944. The fol lowing four years he spent Tin a Siberian prison camp. He de scribed these years as a "night mare.! The weather. was; far be low zero, no warm clothing was provided, and the only shoes were those he had carved from wood. Prisoners were not permitted to burn any part of the wood they had cut. ' . ' "Meinhardt also serves a mission each. Sunday evening in the Rus sian sector of Berlin. Since Rus sian officials will not grant "him permission to freely enter the east sector, he must weekly risk his freedom by sneaking into the com munist sector. "I had opportunity to speak with Christians who lived deep in the Russian zone, and presently were in west sector Berlin on "official business." They all state that the church continues, but under se vere handicaps. I asked what they thought of rumors of the United States' dropping potato bugs on their potato crop. Each time the answer came: 'Everyone knows it's a lie, but we dare not say so.' "Berlin is our listening post in Russian territory, telling us that the freedoms of United States are worth defending." Male Quartet Due At First Nazarene The Crusaders male quartet from Northwest Nazarene college will sing at the Sunday evening services at First Church of the Nazarene, according to the pastor, the Rev. Eugene Stowe. ; The group includes Howard Titterington, first tenor; Don Fer rand, second tenor; Dick Edwards, baritone, and Jim Rohn, bass. They will present an hour's program of hymns, gospel songs and negro spirituals for the public Idaho Woman to Talk Here Sunday The Rev. Elizabeth Carroll Smith, pastor of the Church of Truth at Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, will speak at Salem Woman's club house Sunday at 11 a. m., under auspices of Salem Institute of Re ligious Science. . .
