Both were five-inning games in asmuch as a tourney rule calls for abandonment of the contest if one team is ahead of the other by five runs at the conclusion of the fifth frame. Before the games got under way4 Bill McGinnis, director of the Sil verton team and the man for whom the park is named, was given a fine accolade by Parsy Rose, repre senting the Silverton chamber of commerce. The 1950 tournament was dedicated to the man who has been Mr. Baseball in Silverton. Stu Fredericks, former Portland Beaver and Salem Senator pitcher blanked the Molallans with two hits. The Albinas boomed over six runs in the third frame and it was a triple by Outfielder Rolla-Field and a double by Frederick himself, along with four Molalla errors that helped Immensely. Gene Peterson, another former Salem pro, hurled the win for Sil verton. He was not touched for a run until the fifth when he walk ed Vic Miller and gave up an inside-the-park homer to Larry De Bandt , Bob Christianson, Dick Gentz kow and Irv Roth led the 10-hit Silverton attack. Layne, 194- j husky from Salt Lake City, car ried the fight to Kahut, 180, Wood burn, Ore., almost all the way. The decision was unanimous. There were no knockdowns. After a slow three rounds, tha two fighters opened up and began: heavy hitting. Kahut started that Utah fighter's nose bleeding in the last of the third. Only in the fifth did Kahut ap pear to change the trend. He caught Layne with his favorite overhand right a knockdown blow against some of his other rivals. It shook the Utah boy and Kahut stayed! on top of him through that round. Layne had Kahut on the ropes repeatedly In the eighth, Layne literally belted the Oregonian around the ring and it looked like he might deliver the kayo.
