Open Champs Hit Hot Pace Mangrum, Middlecoff Threaten at Inverness .-. i TOLEDO, O-, July lM)-For-iner national open champions Cary Middlecoff and Lloyd Mangrum went the hot-shots today in the 13th Inverness $15,000 four-ball matches. The two sharpshooters ripped 19 strokes off par for today's two match 38-hole route to climb from last place in the eight team stand ings to a second-place tie, just a point back of the leaders. Drawling Dutch Harrison and Porky Oliver clung to the top spot, although! their point total was shaved as they were held even by Chick Harbert and Bob Hamilton, the latter a former PGA king, and handed a one-down loss by last- gtacers Jimmy Demaret and Jack urke. At the end of three of the seven best-ball matches, Harrison and Oliver paced the pack with plus three under the Inverness system which gives a team a plus for the ' number of holes it finishes' ahead In each match, with the losers get-: ting a corresponding 'minus. Right on their heels, with plus two, were the Mangrum-Middle coff and Sam Snead-Jim Ferrier twosomes, while surprising Fred' die Hass. Jr.. and Fred Hawkins were at plus 1. Jackie Sued By Ad Man CHICAGO, July 14-;p)-Second Baseman Jackie , Robinson of the Brooklyn Dodgers today was' sued for $100,000 damages by a Chicago advertising executive who charged the ball player with breach of con tract. ' ' Stanley Kuttner charged in his superior court suit that Robinson violated a contract which- gave Kuttner exclusive rights to use of Robinson's name in connection with the sale and distribution of men's clothing. - The suit said, a contract between Robinson and Kuttner became ef fective Jan. 3, 1948, but Robinson gave the same rights to "certain other persons" thereafter. It was a sad day for the host Eugene Country club, which sent five men into the quarter-finals, only to see all but one eliminated. The lone survivor was Sid Milligan, long top man at the club. Milligan defeated Don Leal, Eugene, 5 and 3. Also winning were Bob Atkinson, who edged Virgil Snodgrass. Eugene, 1 up; Dick Yost, who downed Dom Provost of Eugene and Ashland, 3 and 2; and Matt Hatala, who trimmed Rod Taylor, Eugene, 5 and 4. Atkinson, who upset defending champion Ron Clark Yesterday, will meet Milligan tomorrow. Ha tala will face Yost,, the formidable Oregon State college golfer. - Grade DeMoss, Corvallis, and Mrs. Lyle Bowman, Portland, de fending champion, will meet for the women's title tomorrow. 'Miss DeMoss defeated Mrs. Lloyd Burgess, Astoria, 2 and 1, and Mrs. Bowman beat Helen Thompson, Medford, the 1948 champion, 6 and 5 in today's matches. Biff Bosses Okek Video NEW YORK. July 14-m-The New York boxing managers guild today accepted a television-radio offer from the International Box ing club and ended its 44-day boy cott of IBC promotions. The managers and Jim Norris, president of the IBC, agreed to sign a one-year contract calling for a minimum TV-radio fee of $2,250 for each main event fighter on Friday night shows. Last year each of the two headiiners col lected $1,000. The fighters also will be given the privileges of accepting 25 per cent of the night's air receipts if that sum is greater than the $4,500 total for the two battlers. Last year the IBC and the gar den corporation, which share equally in that revenue, received approximately $17,000 for each Friday show. Under the new agreement re cordings of a fight will not be shown until 72 hours after it held. i is Cal Sports Seek Television Ouster , LOS ANGELES, July 14-P)- Television interests and the Cal ifornia State Athletic Commission staged a no decision bout today on the board's proposal to supervise radio and television of boxing and wrestling matches. The decision, Chairman Archie Closson announced, will come later when Assistant Attorney General Kenneth Lynch hands down an opinion on the legal aspects of the commission's far reaching propos ali The commission seeks to prohib it telecasting, broadcasting or tak ing of movies of fights or wrest ling without Its permission.
