IS '3 Radio Sends igsto iGreetii GIs Overseas Fathers Day greetings and mes sages of lore winged out of Sa lem , Thursday to servicemen overseas through courtsey of the Salem army and air fore recruit ing service. About Sft such messages were sent free by .the army mobile transmitting station set up on North Church street in front Of the post office. The station will b in operation today only from 0 ajn. to 4 pjn. The radio station on wheels will send messages to any service man in any part of the world. And It did Just that Thursday for a crowd of persons from this area. ML' Sgt Harold G. Nelson, somewhere In Germany, was sent a "Sappy Fathers Day" greeting Xrom his young son, Jimmyt nd vrffej, Marjorie, of 1616 Court st Mayor Robert I Elfstrom sent personal greetings to his wife in Ethiopia in northeast Africa. Mrs. Hfstrom is on a European tour. Message to Son Mrs. Clair Cornutt of Indepen dence sent a message of love to her son, PFC Earl Reeves in the Pacific area. Mrs. Alice Coleman, 865 S. 16th st, sent her regards to her husband, S. Sgt Andy Coleman In Germany. Another message went out to PFC John Erixon, now in Ger ' many, from his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Erixon, Salem route 8. Mrs. Pearl McVey and family of 134S Sixth st, sent their love to AL2 Kent McVey, somewhere In the Pacific aboard a navy ship. John Bryan, Salem route 6, box 3117, sent a message to his uncle. M. Sgt Logan Barnwell at Lackland Air Base, Saa Antonio, Tex. Bryan informed his uncle he had Just enlisted in the U. S. air force here and said he would entrain tor Lackland base within a few days. Quick Revetpt Sgt Fred J. Tourot who Is operating the station, said Che men overseas would probably re ceive the messages "tonight or Friday morning.M He said that a totalj of 1,350 messages had been sent I over his equipment from Oregon In the past two weeks. Sgt. Thourot explained he was member of the military amateur radio set up. Purpose of this group, he said, is to operate In time of emergency or disaster. "Our main reason for being in Oregon now, be said Thursday, "is to stand by in case of a north west flood emergency." When the transmitter leaves Salem today it will go to Sandy for a two-day 8tand.''' ;.. '--.: '.. The messages sent from Salem are transmitted by Sgt Thourot to sending stations in the United States. From there they are relay ed to either, the Pacific or Atlant ic theatres. j , Persons coming to the station with messages should have he complete address, APO designa tion and serial number of the ser viceman to whom they are send ing the messages, Sgt Thourot said. V Death Takes Mrs. Cathey Mrs. Marion Cathey, remem bered by many Salem residents, ha died in Los Angeles, friends learned .Thursday. She was a sister of Kathryn Gunnell, former Salem photogra pher, also now of Los Angeles. Other survivors are the widower, W.;A. Cathey; a nephew in Salem, Merlin J. Gunnell, Jr.; a niece, Mrs. Floyd Case, Portland; two brothers, Dr. Jay Gunnell of Gold en, Colo, and Merlin J. Gunnell Cheyenne, Wyo. Mrs. Cathey died Sunday.
